I think we ought to be harder when minor functionaries of a failed leviathan reveal themselves to have a defective understanding of the role of government in free societies. Steven Chu, the Energy Secretary who came into office saying “we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe“, has now offered up another soundbite for our times. On Friday, he defended the ban on Edison’s iconic incandescent in economic terms:

"We are taking away a choice that continues to let people waste their own money".

So what? I waste my own money on all kinds of things. If I wanted Steven Chu to have a say in it, I’d get Parson Bloomberg to marry us at Gracie Mansion.

The media are loyally doing their best for the Flatline Administration by insisting that the dead parrot economy is not deceased but merely resting for an “unexpectedly” longer period of time than had been expected.

Mark Steyn ping. BTW, I think Steyn has this right and Limbaugh is missing the boat some. Limbaugh said today that Obama is trying to get the GOP Congress to help out his reelection. I think the opposite is true, the GOP Congress is trying to help Obama get reelected, but Obama is refusing. You see raising taxes now might be the death nell for Obama’s reelection, but reducing the deficit and keeping taxes the same MIGHT give him a chance.

The GOP have read the 2010 tea leaves and they’re all but defecating in their pants. They don’t want zero re-elected. They’re actually playing hardball.
Unfortunately, they’re between Palin and a hard place. That’s their real concern because she’ll have a mandate to take no prisoners. lib’s and rino’s will be on the same menu. Lot’s of prison time coming, in my opinion. If she doesn’t unemploy our mandarin class then it’s all moot. They’ll just finish the job in 4-8 yrs.

Nice canned response, but again the GOP Congress in these negotiations is doing all it can to help Obama get reelected, but Obama won’t accept their help. The GOP Congress is doing this because they want the economy to grow for the American people, but that is what Obama needs. Obama on the other hand is holding out to harm his own reelection chances.

The GOP wants the US economy to win. If the US economy wins, the sitting president, Obama wins. But Obama being an ideologue, is refusing the GOP Congress’ help and wants to raise taxes to his own reelection prospects detriment.

So rather than me doubling my meds, perhaps you should invest in a bit of reading comprehension.

Don't worry. There's a big difference, economy-wise, between "winning" and "failing to go into such a catastropic collapse that we're all burning our fence palings to boil kudzu soup."

The GOP House doesn't have the clout or the ganas to achieve the former, although they might reach the later if the don't (as usual ...) cave.

By the way, I’m looking for a presidential candidate who’ll pledge to abolish Secretary Chu’s Department of Energy, if only on misrepresentation grounds: They’ve spent their entire three-and-a-half-decade existence as the Department for Obstructing Energy.

LOL well you have a point, but you forget that the GOP wants to win re-election, too. So they have to push for balanced budget, lower taxes even if that makes Obama look good.

What the GOP may be doing wrong, and I think I heard Hannity talk about this (I get about 1 to 1.5 hours in my car per day to work, back from work, and lunch time and sometimes I do tune into talk) and he said that the GOP should just pass their ideal bill. Pass the best bill they can, and let Obama decide what to do.

Part of the problem is that the talks are in secret, so we don't really know what is on the table. That benefits the GOP too, which is why they agree to it. But if we can get this debate out in the open, and see what is on the table, the constituents can light a fire under the butts of their reps. Of course that is why they keep it a secret. But if this stalemate continues, the GOP must use the power of the House and pass a spending bill.
