"Apple has much to learn about securing an operating system, and it could learn how from Microsoft, Roger Grimes writes in the wake of further evidence that Macs are more vulnerable to attack than Windows machines. 'It's taken Microsoft 10 years to turn security from a weakness into a strength. Apple can use the lessons learned by Microsoft to manage a quick turnaround. Apple has already hired one of Microsoft's former security leaders, Window Snyder, and it has adopted a modified form of Microsoft's Security Development Lifecycle programming practices. Apple has the benefit of seeing how Microsoft fixed its past mistakes.'"

KEYWORDS: apple; malware; microsoft; software
Interesting comments follow on the thread... Interesting too that Apple has adopted Microsoft's approach, including ex-Microsoft security people in an effort to tighten up their security.

One of the problems that Apple has with security updates for MacOS X and iOS is the unnecessarily
HUGE size of the download--in the case of iOS, it's like downloading a complete new copy of the operating system!
This is why I welcome iOS 5.0, due next month in the final release for all iOS devices. That way, you only download the needed parts, so you don't tie up your 3G cellular or Wi-Fi connection.

Window Snyder?
Born to work for Microsoft? Or just a legal change of name to try to get a raise from Gates?

Please note that this link is to a COMMENT in a discussion forum, NOT an article, relating to an earlier article that was soundly criticized. The reference is to a set of third party applications and the article was about a BlackHat conference sponsored BY Microsoft.
The original article featured a "BlackHat" conference attendee's paper referencing some utilities he claimed were "less than secure" in "OSX Server utilities" with out revealing that these were UNIX utilities or that UNIX is the "gold standard" for security in networking and that OSX is one of the four certified and trademarked UNIX operating systems in the world.
His presentation was roundly criticized by the other participants in the BlackHat convention and his statistics DID NOT PROVE HIS CASE. In fact the data and statistics in the article itself DID NOT JUSTIFY THE HEADLINE, where it was revealed that Windows had 1,325 critical flaws in the previous 3 years, while Apple OSX had logged only 1,151. This was discussed on FreeRepublic in the original thread: Black Hat: Apple does well but Microsoft does better with enterprise security
