President Sees Bright Green Future for Battery Jobs; Details Show Reality Still Very Cloudy
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 8/15/2011 | Jack Spencer

On Thursday, President Barack Obama brought Michigan more talk of cutting edge “green” technology and the future jobs he insists it will create.

Obama's visit centered on the Johnson Controls Inc. advanced battery facility in Holland. Two years ago JCI got $299 million in federal stimulus grants to convert a Holland warehouse into an advanced battery plant. This week the Obama administration announced $175 million in new federal grants to "accelerate the development and deployment of advanced vehicle technologies.” JCI is getting a $3 million piece of that funding.

“At a time when Americans are rightly focused on our economy, when Americans are asking about what’s our path forward, all of you here at Johnson Controls are providing a powerful answer,” Obama said. “This is one of the most advanced factories in the world. You’re helping America lead in a growing new industry.”

Obama visited Holland last summer at the opening of a LG Chem advanced battery facility, which is also heavily subsidized with U.S. taxpayer dollars. In a sense, regarding Thursday's appearance, the President had “been there before.” So has Michigan. The years when Jennifer Granholm was Michigan's governor (2003 – 2010) were dominated by the same promises.

One of obama’s green battery manufacturers went bankrupt last month... just like all of obama’s ideas.

Better to give the bucks to individuals and spread it around the marketplace than to sink it into the "preconceived notion" of a non existent market for these batteries.

And where are we going to get the rare minerals from???

CHINA!!!!!!!! Who would have thunk!!

At a time when Americans are rightly focused on our economy...we’re wasting your money like it grows on trees.

Since when are Presidents battery salesmen? Unless he can clearly tie it to shared security (he can’t); he should let the market decide.

Just reading a piece in ScienceNews about all the new ways "they" are coming up with to power small electronic devices. Neat stuff.

None of it's being built in Obama's Green factories though. That's all old fashioned stuff.

The irony - Very few things are dirtier than battery production and consumption.

Back when industry’s believed asbestos was a miracle material (it is, still is, and always will be) nobody could know that if you smoked, and worked around asbestos, the combo would cause agressive lung cancers.

It didn’t stop lawyers from sewing the industry out of business, of course.

Ever notice that we never had shuttle issues with heat shields until the greenies forced NASA to use different materials in the shielding process on the main tank and thrusters?

All this battery thing is doing is giving lawyers kids an industry to kill when they retire and pass them the firm.

obama was born behind the curve... he is truly dumb and nothing has changed since his birth.

Battery jobs will explode when we get batteries with roughly 10x the capacity per pound of present ones...and which are capable of 1,000 or more recharge cycles.

The Cretin-in-Chief wouldn’t know which end of the battery is the + side.

Heck, he doesn’t even know what the + sign means.

“Greenies” didn’t make NASA do that ~ it was their own too politically correct management team that did that.
