If I have some old hard beans and if I plant them...will they grow?

Usually the FoodSaver is in or near the aisle with small appliances, dishes and pots and pan sets. Sam’s will also have a large box of FoodSaver rolls of sealing material. You are able to cut the size bags that you need. It is a good price ... I’ve looked everywhere. The only place that could possibly be better would be on Amazon.

Take a handful- soak a bit and wrap them in wet toweling, leave them a few days, misting them with a sprayer enough so they don’t dry out- unwrap and see how many have sprouted to see how “growable” they are.

ALL plastic bags are porous, its just a matter of how permeable. Water molecules are very large. Different gases have different size molecules, most being very small. Its because of thesesmall molecules that mylar is used.

Plastic bags are fine for relatively short time storage (a year or so) but inadequate for multi years.

I suspected that that would be where it would be. I’ll let you know how I make out.

And we need 5 gallon food safe containers with an o-ring vs cleaned out 2 gallon plastic deli containers?

If you are storing stuff in plastic sealed bags...like Foodsaver or mylar...then the bucket just needs to be well cleaned. The used ones from the market are presumably food safe anyway. But if the bucket is lined, it won't matter.

Corrected! So if you can't get them from your local bakery/market/resturant go to Home Depot, Lowes and Walmart all three carry the buckets and the 'O' rings lids though the lids a sold seperately. save yourself the shipping cost.

Foodsaver bags are not a good choice for long term (multi-year) storage. They won’t keep the oxygen out and will not hold a vacuum for that length of time. I had some bags sitting on the shelf for about 5 years, they wouldn’t hold well enough to seal and cracked with handling.

Yup. I studied up based on what I read here. I just ordered me a supply of 5 mil mylar bags and 02 absorbers from USA Emergency Supply. I figure I'll put the Foodsaver vac sealed supplies I've already packaged into a gallon mylar bag with a couple 100cc 02 absorbers and heat seal the whole thing.

I’ve purchased my mylar at pleasanthillgrain. Scroll down about half way. They also have the O2 absorbers.

http://www.pleasanthillgrain.com/plastic_bucket_5_gallon_buckets_6_container_gamma_lid_lids.aspx

They only carry two sizes but they’ve met my needs, 1 for the buckets and one for smaller items.

If you want more choices go here - http://www.sorbentsystems.com/mylar.html but be careful to get the food grade ones.

are you saying if I wind up buying and using mylar bags that I don’t need food-safe buckets, just regular buckets but with an o’ring?

Well...yeah. If the food is sealed in mylar, the bucket is just a storage medium and with the O ring, another barrier to moisture, bugs and such.

Food placed in Mylar bags and then place in the buckets from Home Depot and you should be fine. The mylar not only will keep the oxygen out of your food, but anything that might leech out of the bucket as well.
