Raising Hell in Subsidized Housing

Section 8 rental subsidies have long helped ruin neighborhoods. Obama administration policies are making things worse.

BY JAMES BOVARD

Section 8 rental subsidies have long been one of the most controversial federal social programs. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Obama administration is making a troubled program worse.

In the 1990s, the feds were embarrassed by skyrocketing crime rates in public housing—up to 10 times the national average, according to HUD studies and many newspaper reports. The government’s response was to hand out vouchers to residents of the projects (authorized under Section 8 of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974), dispersing them to safer and more upscale locales.

Section 8’s budget soared to …

Thank you for posting this!

They are giving the “poor” more rent money a month than my middle class mortgage! Imagine we are paying people to harbor criminals, ruin neighborhoods, to be criminals themselves.

My friend has a duplex, section 8 people moved in threatened right away to kill the neighbor, my friend lost his good tenant. The Section 8 ers pay $100, you and I pay $1100 of their rent. They don’t work so the $100 is from us too. Whole family has cell phones, even the 8 year old. Husband is an alcoholic/ drug abuser. Kids are from multiple fathers.

BTW they are white. “Oh, what would you do throw them out in the street?” I’d sure as hell stop giving them all that money to threaten people, drink, bum and take drugs while they breed more kids who are being taught to harm society.

Read this along with the illegal immigrant articles. The Obama admin is insisting that you can’t do anything when they move Section 8 people in, and they commit crimes and harass the neighborhood. You must allow them to harbor their relative, recently released from prison, on your dime.

Your country is being dismantled with your money, it is being transferred from you to whichever “them” will keep democrats in power and “transform” America into something worse.

Its happening in my part of town now. The Urbans are starting to trickle in, and with them, the crime.

Note, Urbans is not a racial term here. My next door neighbor is black, and he is my friend and a great guy. No sir, I am talking about people with little respect for authority or cleanliness apparently. It sucks, it is bringing everything down.

We can’t (thank goodness) take section-8 - there’s lead paint.

We walk a fine line - you can’t turn down section-8 because of lead paint (you have to fix it) but you can’t rent to section-8 to begin with and the places won’t pass section-8 muster...so......

Once you are section-8 you are in the system - both renters and landlords.

Oops. Addendum to Post #7.

What is the Difference Between Slaves on Plantations and Blacks Who Blindly Vote for Democrats? -- What does a slave-owner have to provide, free, for his slaves?

1. Free Housing. 2. Free Food. 3. Free Healthcare 4. A menial education sufficient to the task he requires the slave to perform.

What is the one thing a slave owner required of his slaves? 1. Unquestioning Loyalty. What do the democrats always promise to provide, free, to blacks? 1. Free Housing. 2. Free Food. 3. Free healthcare 4. A free menial education, sufficient to get them to the voting booth. What is the one thing Democrats require of their constituents?

1. Unquestioning Loyalty. The only question black democrats have to ask themselves is: Who’s your master now?' The Democrat Party survives because it keeps blacks poor and dependent on Democrat hand-outs to survive.

Democrats do something similar with gays: they keep us in check by scaring gays into believing Republicans are evil and want to kill us, so the only protection we have is to vote Democrat, Democrat, Democrat. Democrats keep Hispanics under control by pushing Spanish as much as possible, so Hispanics never learn English and don’t progress as much in society.

Women are kept in line by Democrats though cultural wedge issues like abortion, where, once again, people are convinced to vote against their own economic best interests because Democrats create boogeymen to scare them into believing conservatives are evil and want to harm them or take away their rights. If even one of the groups --" blacks, gays, Hispanics "-- above could be reasoned with, and would actually see what the Democrat Party does to them, the fragile identity-bloc coalition that makes up the Democrat Paty would collapse on itself. If you blindly vote Democrat, year after year, without ever asking what you REALLY get out of it, you are either a slave or a damn fool.

I too have 2 duplexes in such an area. When I bought them things were fine, until some SlumLords bought into that area, and rented to every Tom,Dick and Harry who had the bucks for the SecDep, and they never did a background check.

Now it is impossible to keep glass in your windows, fences always down, ac/units stollen, low life's walking the street in their pants to the ground, underwear showing, holding their crotch to hold their pants on.

Impossible to sell these units & I can't even get good Sec8 renters in there. The area is now called the Dungeon, and the Police seem helpless to help.

The problem lies directly at the SLUMLORDs feet, and the legal system who will not do their jobs.

In our area Middle Easterners are buying up foreclosed homes in the suburbs and then as a new slum landlord renting them to Section 8 denizens. Obama has accellerated this Section 8 program.

James Bovard has been writing about this plague and government war to destroy the suburbs for years now.

Section 8: A Wrecking Ball for Your Neighborhood
by James Bovard, September 1996

The federal government is involved in economic blockbusting in thousands of the nation’s neighborhoods. The federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is using government handouts to allow welfare recipients to move into middle-class and upper middle-class neighborhoods.

Congress created the Section 8 program in 1974 to provide direct rent subsidies to selected low-income families. Section 8 currently gives over $7 billion a year in rental subsidies to over 2 million families. HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros is pushing to rapidly expand the program to allow more welfare recipients to move to affluent neighborhoods. Cisneros calls Section 8 “a wonderful mechanism because it gives people tremendous choice and mobility.” Section 8 is a symbol of government welfare run amok — of social workers using the power of subsidies to seek to forcibly change the nature of hundreds of suburban neighborhoods.

HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing Roberta Achtenberg declared last year on National Public Radio: “We are compelled by statutory prescription as well as constitutional mandate to see to it that every American has open and free housing choice.” But the only people today who have “free housing choice” are those who have HUD vouchers that force other taxpayers to cover all or most of their rent.

police won’t help because the police do two things:try to catch people doing minor car infractions, speeding, etc, and respond to 911 calls.

They need to get back to policing, aka walking the beat. How many pants on the ground walkers are going to enjoy walking past the cops? But most cops just sit in their cars and talk on their own cellphones.

We, and I do mean we because the taxpayers are paying this, are giving up to $2,300 a month for rent? In Hawaii? Here’s an idea. The moslem lovers are worried that we’re not doing enough to help out Egypt and Libya and Syria. Let’s turn them into Section 8 housing! I’ll bet you can find plots of sand that they’ll rent for $500 a month. Sure, you’d have the initial cost of plane tickets, but think of the money we’d save in the long run. I’ll bet Israel would pony-up some money too just for the fun of watching the Arabs deal with the inner city kids.

Saying that crime rates are much higher in Section Eight housing areas is akin to saying dishonesty and lower education rates are higher in the prisons. One breeds the other.

Any landlord who accepts section 8 is a fool.We always stuck to one bedroom units so we could legally say no to it.

That is why we no longer rent and would rather leave a place empty. Here in Ohio if you rent to section 8 and they trash the place you can only recover $200 for damages. With a one bedroom that takes out 99.9% of those who are eligible for section 8 because it requires one bedroom for every 2 kids or one for each sex if there are 2 kids.

OPPPSSS to be more clear you need at least a 2 bedroom apartment to accommodate a section 8 Mom with one child under their guidelines.
