Obama to Honor 11 NASCAR Drivers, Five Decline
Brian Koenig ^ | 9/2/11 | Brian Koenig

Apparently Obama plans to honor NASCAR playoff champion Jimmie Johnson and 11 other drivers in a White House ceremony next week, but five of the 2010 playoff contenders are skipping out. Ouch.

"(SB Nation) — NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers — Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart — will not be attending the White House visit due to “schedule conflicts.”

They must be very busy people. Regardless of one’s political views, the president is still the president — and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a rare and special one.

You’d think whatever photo shoots or sponsor appearances these drivers have lined up on Wednesday afternoon — if that’s indeed the reason — could be rescheduled. After all, this is the President of the United States we’re talking about here.

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers turn down the president’s invitation simply seems strange.

Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton and Matt Kenseth will attend."

When the President is going after NASCAR drivers you know he is desperate for votes. After all, which demographics holds the majority of NASCAR fans? Midwest, gun-toting white men - the voter base President Obama doesn't like, but has to pretend to like to win another term.

So I think we all know what happens next: "Those white bigoted racists are too good to shake hands with a black president?" Yes Mr. Sharpton and Mr. Jackson, just as racist as you would be if you declined such an offer from good old George W.

It would be so much better if they were all extremely “busy” and unable to attend.

Of course Johnson and Gordon will go. Their boss was pardoned by Obama’s Sec. of State’s husband.

A friend of mine was in a small restaurant that Bill Clinton ended up having dinner in. They closed it off to the public, but people already inside were allowed to stay. He was able to briefly meet the president and shook his hand.

I told him at the time that presented with that situation I would have REFUSED to shake Clinton's hand.

I would refuse today to shake Barack Obama’s hand. Not because he is Black, but because of his policies and beliefs which are totally opposite of my own. Just like Bill Clinton.

When I was in High School, I did shake Bobby Kennedy's hand. I was young and didn't know any better.

Good, NONE of them should attend.

Horsecrap. This man acts no more presidential than I do.

He is using them as props to try to appeal to the good ole boys...as such, they have every right to refuse to be a party to it. Good for them.

One can only imagine what the “man with the armband” was thinking when this photo was taken.

I shook Ronald Reagan’s hand in 1976. It’s probably about time to wash it.

Reminds me of the old hillbilly sayin';

"Why should I vote, the people who run thangs ain't on them ballots"

I would like the well dressed whores who parade around as candidates have to wear NASCAR like suits full of decals naming their pimps.

Remember the NASCAR junket the DNC tried to hold? The one where the memo was leaked about needing inoculations to go to the race?
Desperate indeed..

The important thing to remember is that he was not the monster we know when that picture was taken - at least, evidence was scant and likely not to be believed by most.

People forget that even Caligula was a cute little baby at one time.

Another example of the slow slow slow Obama team. When did Jimmy Johnson win his 5th Sprint cup? Last November! O’s a little backed up from vacations I guess. Anybody that turns down an Obama invitation has my admiration though.

I shook Robert Kennedy's hand too....sort of...he was reaching out to a lot of kids and I'm sure our hands at least grazed....LOL

you know, there was a time that everyone at least respected certain people....like teachers...you always respected teachers....the teacher was always right and you know your parents would side with the teacher...

and police....used to be all cops were looked up to as heros....now, we question them...and they do deserve to be questioned...

democrats used to at least have a modicum of integrity and earned respect...they at least tried to represent the little people...the workers...the soldier....

but now what do we have?....

"playoff"?
WTF?

NASCAR is probably the wrong sport for this A-hole to go kissing up to for votes.

And why should they give dumb excuses? "Scheduling" - Sheeesh.
Just say, "I wouldn't shake that man's hand with a gun to my head" and be done..

The most patriotic thing they could have done, and they did it. Good for them!

The only one authorized by the Constitution (20th Amendment) to “act as President” at this point is (maybe) Joe Biden - and that’s only if the electoral vote certification is still legally valid even though it didn’t fulfill the legal requirements since Dick Cheney did not ask if there were any objections to the states’ electoral votes.

I would say the exact opposite:

For a sport that prides itself on patriotism, having so many drivers **accept** the president’s invitation simply seems strange.

Pretend to go to the White House to visit a pretend President...

Sounds like Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac - turning pretend mortgages into pretend stock shares to be bought and sold with pretend, fiat money.

Lotta pretending going on these days.

When Brian France is done with NASCAR, there won't be a conservative on either side of the catch-fence. He and Zero both share a fetish for destroying traditions and having them rebuilt in their own image.
