A President Adrift
Daily Beast ^ | September 2, 2011 | Michael Tomasky

Posted on 09/03/2011 6:35:35 PM PDT by lbryce

More dispiriting news, this time about the White House overturning the EPA’s proposed new rules on smog. That comes a few hours after the jobs report from Friday morning, one of the bleakest yet. And it comes a few days in advance of what everyone expects will be a small-thinking, modest, blah jobs speech by the president. It’s not only getting to the point where it’s getting hard to see him winning reelection. It’s getting to the point where it’s hard to imagine people taking him seriously for the remaining 14 months of his current term.

The smog decision is a real low. The story behind this includes the fact that, as Brad Plumer reports environmental groups were going to file a lawsuit in 2009 about Bush-era ozone rules, and the Obama administration told them, in effect, “Wait, don’t hassle us with a lawsuit, we’re going to propose stricter rules soon.” So the stricter rules were proposed, and the White House has now said, “Sorry, changed our mind.”

We can’t calculate yet how this will reverberate through the environmental world, but we can imagine. This is the kind of thing that sticks with people. A promise was made and broken. And you know how partisans say sometimes in anger that we’d have been better off with the other guy? They say it for effect and don’t actually mean it. But in this case, it’s literally true. Bush-proposed standards in 2008 were tougher than the 1997 standards under which companies will now operate. I doubt environmentalists will forget this one.

For some of us, he's never been taken seriously.

It is astonishing that Mr. Tomasky and his ilk cannot draw the straight line connection between overregulation of our world and the loss of jobs. They believe that companies can simply wave a magic wand and reduce their emissions without spending a penny. They all live in a utopian fairy tale world.

Obama is really blowing it with his base and he doesn’t seem to care.

Either Obama is the most ignorant twit to ever enter politics or he is banking on some unknown event to turn the tables on us.

He’s put himself in a tough spot. He has to do something to boost hiring. This was a big dark cloud hanging over the economies head. If he doesn’t get jobs added and the economy going he’s cooked Nov 2012. He HAD to abandon this regulation.

He figures it’ll be much easier to patch things up with the idiot nutjobs on his party than it would be with independents that care about the economy.

Is he losing the Daily Beast?

Earlier today there was a thread of Robert Redford's dismay at Obama. Losing Hollywood, too?

The “idiot nutjobs in his party”....

We have a whole nest chock full of Norma Desmonds in this gAngsministration. They even have the White Crib to crash as they lay out their latest scams. You know?

They believe that companies can simply wave a magic wand and reduce their emissions without spending a penny.

I know people who think exactly like that. They'll tell you: "Companies have plenty of money. They only pollute because they are ornery and because they don't care about the earth. It's not like they have to pollute: they just don't care."

The concept that companies may be trying to stay in business and are trying to make a payroll so that they can avoid layoffs and retain their market position is completely foreign to the Liberal way of thinking.

Mr. Tomasky also claims that the Republican inspired cut back in government jobs is contributing to the overall job loss. He is clueless that cutting government jobs is the best way to spur private sector growth. Not only does it reduce the drain on private investment by excessive taxes, it also encourages private growth by reducing the regulatory burden since there are fewer government busy-bodies sticking their noses into private enterprise!

0bama is an idologue. A died in the wool Marxist. For my money, a Muslim, too, and an illegal alien—hence his desire to make so many of them US citizens.

With his ineligibility, he simply ignores the US Constitution, delaying, saying nothing, stonewalling, doing everything he can to simply run a numbers game/fraud of such massive proportions that the US cannot stand as a sovereign nation.

Until he was elected, I never really believed how the US could not be mentioned in the Bible in any way. This man wants to be the last President of the US.

If he is elected in 2012...well, let’s just say I am praying we at least have a swan song.

We who are here have whetted our whistles on freedom. We have the spirit of America in us. That taste of liberty sits light on the heart and never dies, even in the strongest of storms.

In Governor Palins speech today, she said Obama was a President adrift.

Now an article by the beast comes out with the same headline?

weird.

Sounds like he is planning on Iran getting nukes AND using them, giving him the perfect excuse to declare martial law and become dictator.

While I completely agree with you, I have to point out that if the government cuts jobs badly (and they will) they will avoid the potential benefits you specify.

Example: If the majority of the people who process new security clearance requests are laid off, what happens?

1) The number of unemployed increases
2) Security clearance requests take forever to complete

No benefit there at all. There is only pain.

The government can and should cut back spending in ways which help the economy to grow -- but is likely to cut spending in the stupidest ways it can think of. They will hope that people will say "We tried cutting spending, and things just got worse."

Government is evil ... but it's not as stupid as some folks think.
