In the 1600’s when France was colonizing in Canada, women were urged to have large families, and female orphans in France were sent to Canada to marry and produce children (”daughters of the King”...he provided these girls with a dowry). When the British were beginning to wrest control of Canada from the French in the 1700’s, the women of French descent, were urged again to have even larger families, it was called “revenge of the cradle”. I know researching my husband’s family tree (the Catholic church in Canada kept wonderful records) he has ancestors who had 20-22 children with wife no. l, and when that poor, worn out woman passed on to her rewards, proceeded to do the same with wife no. 2.

The English soldiers had the right to be the first in bed with the new brides whenever the locals got married. They wanted the womens first born to be sired by an Englishman instead of her Scottish, or Irish bride.
