Perry Open to Further Intervention in Mexico’s Drug War

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Gov. Rick Perry of Texas said on Saturday that as president, he would consider sending American troops into Mexico to help defeat drug cartels and improve border security. He indicated that any such action would be done “in concert” with the Mexican government.

“It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill these drug cartels and to keep them off of our border and to destroy their network,” Mr. Perry said during a campaign appearance here.

“I don’t know all the different scenarios that would be out there,” he said. “But I think it is very important for us to work with them to keep that country from failing.”

Sending soldiers into Mexico — even with the approval of the Mexican government — would represent a far more aggressive policy than the one employed by Washington in recent years, despite the stepped-up surveillance and logistical aid that has been provided to Mexican authorities.

The idea would also almost certainly be a non-starter with Mexican authorities. Mexico lost half of its territory to the United States in the 1850s, and ever since it has been very sensitive to the idea of any involvement by American troops in its territory.

........Mr. Perry made the comments about potentially sending troops into Mexico while describing his hopes for increased cooperation with the Mexican government, and he said that if he were elected president, he would work hard to “create a very trusting relationship” with his counterpart in Mexico.

His comments also suggested that he may pursue a far more interventionist military and foreign policy in Mexico, one that is much more expansive that even the widened approach that the Obama administration has sought.......

I do not believe Mexico is able to secure their own State, and I doubt they would allow us to do it either, but it isn’t a totally bad idea.

It sure does get their attention. IOW, if they don't want us fixing the problem with, or without them, they better get on it.

People might accuse Governor Perry of being heartless.

I think he could handle it.

Mexico is a failed state, comparable to Afghanistan in its incompetence in the face of drug-dealing warlords.

The economic benefits of wiping out the cartels (and the corrupt officials in cahoots with them) would far outweigh the negative short-term consequences of intervening more aggressively (even at the cost of transferring some troops from Afghanistan to North America).

My belief is that Afghanistan and Pakistan are lost causes.

I realise the dangers of Pakistan owning nukes, but it won’t be long before countries even more dangerous have them.Pakistan has proven they cannot be trusted, and the British, Russians and now us are being driven out of Afghanistan. Is it really worth the lives of our troops to have them stay there when more people are being killed every day in Mexico than in Afghanistan.Right here on oue side of the world.

I don’t see us going to Mexico, without Mexicao asking us to and I don’t believe that will happen, but we do need to recognise the dangers that could spread to our country any time.I believe most Americans do recognise the danger , but
Napolitano, Holder, The Bama boy haven’t got a clue,.

If only the ranchers didn't want fences that take up much of their land and prevent livestock from reaching the river. If Only the government didn't make it mandatory to educate those children through highschool. If only.....

Yes Obama insulted the Governor of a huge state. Perry tried to give him a letter requesting border assistance and it was refused not only by Obama but his little minion Valerie Jarrett. This insult made all the news outlets in TX and did not make Obama any friends there.

Frankly, I don’t want to see one single American GI die fighting drug cartels IN Mexico. Put our servicemen ON the border, but not one step inside Mexico. The drug cartels are armed to the teeth thanks to Obama, and knowing how the Dems have tied the hands of ICE and the Border agents, they would also tie the hands of our troops. Close the border and let the Mexicans kill each other.

Yes, you’re right and that’s what my image showed. Obama had previously refused to take Perry’s phone calls too.
Perry has always stood up to Obama and Obama hates that, and our success in Texas.

Obama first shut down our oil drilling, he’s refused border help and has even enacted a delay on deportation. He delayed helping with the Bastrop fire until over a thousand homes and 100 thousand acres of land were burned. Obama put unreasonable EPA restrictions on our chemical plants and refineries, etc, etc.

And in spite of all that we have prospered better than any other state. Oil drilling is starting up again but I understand the conditions to do so are onerous.

****** Aug 13, 2009: Texas gov. compares Gaza to Mexico”……Perry also recalled the Texas-Israel Exchange - a body that supports the trade of agricultural know-how between Texan and Israeli scientists - which he established in 1991, while serving as the Texas Agriculture Commissioner.

"We have a connection that goes back many years," he said. "And Israel has a lot that we can learn from, especially in the areas of water conservation and semi-arid land - Israeli technology has helped us a lot in dealing with drought."

"But also," the governor continued, "when I was here for the first time some 18 years ago and I was touring the country, the comparison between Masada and the Alamo was not lost on me. I mean, we're talking about two groups of people who were willing to give up their lives for freedom and liberty." Beyond the comparisons, Gov. Perry said another point of his trip here was to show other people "what was really going on", with regards to the military threats facing the country, and in particular the IDF's recent Operation Cast Lead in the Gaza Strip.

"We went to the border with Gaza and received a briefing from the army there, and we went to Sderot and saw the police station with all the Kassam rockets piled up, we saw playgrounds that had to be covered from rocket fire. It's a powerful place." In that vein, the governor said he was also interested in learning more about security aspects while in the country, as Texas has a large, porous border with Mexico, and the recent violence in that country had unnerved many Texans.

"Israel is a leader in security technology, and another reason for our visit to the Gaza border was to see some of the security measures being used there," said Perry.

"Kassam rockets have killed 28 Israelis over the last eight years. Well, 1,000 people have been killed in Juarez [Mexico, on the border with El Paso , Texas] since the beginning of the year [in drug-related violence]. So we're trying to find ways to secure that border, because just like it's important to Israelis to keep heavy security on their border with Gaza, it's important to citizens of Texas to keep out the illegal activities that are going on with drugs [in Mexico]……”.

Honestly I don’t care or GaS about these other countries including Israel. My ONLY allegiance is to the USA.

These other entangling alliances that we’ve somehow become addicted to and involved with, in direct contradiction to our founding father George Washington, mean nothing to me.

My ancestors came to the USA from Germany in the early 1700s, and frankly Germany means nothing to me. If you believe that any other nation should have a priority over the USA then I would suggest that you (meaning anyone) move there and GTF out of the USA. It is outrageous that any American would put other nations before our own.
