Just out of curiosity, what do you think this guy's purpose is, behind his claim of being a Marine? Is he trying to get some benefit from the claim? Is he using it to fulfill a job requirement? Is he using it to get attention? Most former military don't readily bring up their past service unless asked, or if they happen to come across other brothers in-arms, with whom they might share some common experience or story.

It would be interesting to hear and see how this person acts and talks around other known military, especially around other Marines. If they're willing to tell you all about their past experiences as civilians, but are reticent around other military, perhaps they're afraid of being exposed.

Do they have any pictures of themselves in uniform? Ask to see them in a flattering way. Especially if he's been in the service recently, he should almost certainly have photos. Ask to see his boot camp picture, or to see his bootcamp yearbook. Most naval ships on deployment have "cruise books," showing their crews and their ports of call. Perhaps the Marines offer something similar.

Otherwise, unless he's using his service to gain some advantage over you or others, I would ignore his claims, or take them with a grain of salt.

I’ve had my bona-fides tested before. I didn’t find it especially offensive- I ended up having a pleasant chat with a guy who knew my Senior after I went through.

Done with the least bit of respect by someone who has BTDT, I can’t see how it would be. Better for everyone to have thing vetted if there is any question.

Ask him what his MOS was. This stands for “Military Occupational Status’’ in other words, what his job(or duty was). If he can’t answer that he’s a fraud. Also, ask what the duty(or job) of a Marine Gunerry Sargent is. A “Gunny’’ is unique to the Marine Corps, no other branch of the service has this rank. His job is to make sure all the Marines in his squad or platoon are fully supplied with ammo and that their weapons are clean, fully operational and ready for use at all times.

Do the simple things. Ask where he went to boot camp, what division he was in, what battalion and what regiment. Ask him if he had a drill sergeant. If he says yes, he is lying. All Marines are heroes. Very few of them feel like they have to tell anyone about it.
