I’ve been studying this four a couple of years now.
I’ve determined that the only ones who will survive a SHTF situation will be those who clan cluster together in communities of 1000 to 2000 like-minded, survival-determined individuals.
Simply bugging out to a retreat will not be enough. Looters will kill you and steal what you have.
You need enough people situated in an area that can grow its own food, with ample, potable water, and a good defensible geography far away from population clusters (major cities).

Maybe someone should start a movement for that. You know, like all those liberaltarians going to New Hampshire with the Free State Project..... you could launch the Survivor State Project or whatever you want to call it.

Designing a defensible layout could be a part of it, and looking for very very rural land to set it on too. If each member (must have diverse but useful skills/knowledge) ponied up a “deposit” to seek out the right land it could get off the ground.
I’m almost out far enough. I plan on maybe dropping some trees to block road access to my place and hope the looters move on to easier pickings.
If they are determined to find me, they will. The casual looter will look elsewhere.
Plant native plants that provide food, but aren’t obviously food. A well tended garden or field of grain and wheat are easy targets. Food that looks like weeds / native landscape plants will be overlooked. Make your plantings have multiple uses. Plants can be used for shade, shelter, windbreaks, water channeling, supports for other crops.
The idea is to set up food systems that require only energy to harvest with minimal energy input to maintain or provide water.
