Torture’s Future [Reaping the whirlwind of Obama's timidity, and soon]
New York Times ^ | November 21, 2011 | ERIC LEWIS

Posted on 11/21/2011 2:20:56 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

...“We’ll reject torture — without exception or equivocation.” During his first month in office, [Obama] made good on his pledge, signing an executive order prohibiting torture or inhumane treatment. There is no reason to doubt that the order has been followed. This was a huge step forward for the United States.

But if he loses the presidency next year, Obama’s failure to deal with the legacy of torture that he inherited may turn out to be a huge problem. He has left the door open for state-sanctioned torture to be part of the next administration’s tool kit for dealing with the “global war on terror.”...

So what happened? The president has rejected three clear opportunities to erect a high legal wall against the return of torture: he has made it clear that criminal prosecutions for torture will not go forward; he has opposed the creation of a truth commission to examine events comprehensively; and he has affirmatively intervened to stop civil litigation by detainees against their torturers.

When President Obama took office, I was in the midst of litigating a civil case against former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the military chain of command for torture......

[Big SNIP]

The Republican candidates, by and large, have made themselves clear: they will not be inhibited in ordering torture. Rick Perry, for example, declared that techniques that might “save young lives” would be approved by a Perry White House. “This is war.” Perry said. “That’s what happens in war.”...

The Obama administration can’t just say, “Trust us.” Its challenge was not only to stop the American government from torturing detainees, but to institutionalize the legal infrastructure that would prevent the resumption of torture. President Obama had the opportunity....Instead, we may reap the whirlwind of his timidity, and soon.

Perry: I wouldn't honor "trigger" spending cuts

The CBS News/NJ GOP debate video

Rick Perry: “Let me just address Congressman Paul. And I-- Congressman, I-- I respect that you wore the uniform of our country. But-- in 1972, I volunteered to serve the United States Air Force. And the idea that we have our young men and women in combat today, Senator, where there are people who would kill them in a heartbeat, under any circumstance, use any technique that they can, for us not to have the ability to try to extract information from them, to save our young people's lives, is a travesty. This is war. That's what happens in war. And I am for using the techniques, not torture, but using those techniques that we know will extract the information to save young American lives. And I will be for it until I die.”

The day after Pete was killed, I was sitting at the dining room table with Hardtail, just trying to make sense of all that was going on.

My cell phone rang. "Unknown" said the caller ID.

Thought about letting it pass, but I answered it.

"Alan, this is Rick Perry."…..

Leave it to the Leftists at the NYT to worry about the possibility of harsh treatment of terrorists who want to destroy the USA.

Most of the country is worried about Obama’s Marxist plans to destroy the USA.

I don’t know about “detainees” but reading the NYT would make me want to stick my head under water for extended periods of time.

This sounds to me like a "you have to vote for Zero otherwise the Republicans will do terrible things...like kicking puppies and torturing people".

The gentle rub of Zero is their version of subtlety.

islam a cult of death, oppression, murder, is at war with America and civilization. In the end one will prevail I would rather it be us. If torturing people that believe hijacking airliners and flying them into buildings full of civilians can help insure we do prevail then I have NO PROBLEM with that...

Cain, May 5, 2011, Regarding the killing of al-Qaeda terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki

"He should be charged. And since he's an American citizen, he should be tried in our courts," Cain said of al-Awlaki. When asked if he considered it legal for President Obama to order al-Awlaki killed, Cain said, "In his case, no, because he's an American citizen. If he's an American citizen, which is the big difference, then he should be charged, and he should be arrested and brought to justice."

Cain, October, 2011, Regarding the killing of al-Qaeda terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki

"Asked why he had backed off his opposition to the U.S. military's targeting Anwar Awlaki, the al Qaeda terrorist and American citizen who was killed Friday by a drone strike in Yemen, Cain denied that he had ever opposed taking out Awlaki. “I never said that [President Obama] should not have ordered [the killing]. I don’t recall saying that. I think you’ve got some misinformation," Cain said. "Keep in mind that there are a lot of people out there trying to make me sound as if I am indecisive."

making someone REALLY uncomfortable is not torture

anything you would voluntarily do is not torture

Our brave soldiers voluntarily put themselves through waterboarding as a training test, so it is not torture

Tearing off fingernails- thats torture

Per SD
This is just how Rick Perry is. After Hurricane Ike devastated my community, he came here to survey the damage. He did not just walk through here surrounded by security and news cameras and then make a speech. That's not Perry. He showed up in jeans and a work shirt, no cameras, no press conference, and he walked among all of us who had been hit. A hug, a pat on the shoulder, a listening ear, and an encouraging word. He saw to it that emergency shelters were being set up and food and water were available to everyone. When Obama/FEMA refused to help us, Governor Perry set up state funding to help us rebuild our homes and our lives. My home is at 'ground zero' where Ike came ashore. We all took tremendous damage. FEMA sent me a check two months later for $600 dollars. Governor Perry set up the Recovery Fund to help us all rebuild. That is what a true leader and a true Christian does. That's my Governor! I can't wait to see America under the caring wing of Rick Perry.

The morons at the NYT consider the equivalent of a fraternity hazing “torture”, so their opinion is irrelevant.
