Confessions of a Light Bulb Addict

Please don’t think this is easy for me. I’m one of those crazed Americans who can’t walk into Home Depot, Target or my local grocery store right now without wanting to grab one of those king-sized shopping carts and stuff it to the gunwales with 100-watt incandescent light bulbs.

Maybe it’s the sheer thrill of buying bulbs that in just over a month, as of Jan. 1, 2012, will be banned for sale in America. What fun, in this incandescent twilight, to acquire legally what the federal government will soon treat as contraband, should it appear in any American marketplace. Or maybe it’s that gut sense that with the dollar teetering toward an abyss of unfathomable and inflationary government spending, those beloved old 100 watt bulbs will at least provide a decent store of value, even if all I do is use them to read by for the rest of my life — meticulously taking care never to violate federal law by offering even a single bulb for sale to some fellow citizen willing to pay for it.

Or, just possibly, this urge to stockpile incandescents is the product of simmering outrage. For decades, I have written about America as the world’s beacon of freedom, which it has been. Yet here we are, wards of the nanny state, with politicians dictating that even that prime symbol of American ingenuity, Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb, shall be regulated into oblivion.

Its not the only ban either. Its ridiculous. What about the millions of people who will be forced to get a prescription for those asthma inhalers now?

Well, guess what. You are likely to be diagnosed with Seasonal Affectation Disorder (millions of Americans are afflicted by it, particularly in the short-day states) aka SAD, and your physician can prescribe incandescent lights to keep your spirits up.

You have no shortage of incandescent bulbs in your future.

I’m quite serious. The greensheviks are going to lose their ass here, if they want to take it there.

I need to stock up on, uh, tree bulbs during the holidays. Yeah, tree bulbs. That’s it. Those big bright white ones.

For now it only bans the 100 watt bulbs and then phases the others out over the next several years.

And while you cannot buy a 100 watt incandescent bulb after 1.1.2012 it will not be until 1.1.2013 when Federal Agents kick in your front door without a warrant and search your home for contraband light bulbs.

Not if you have been diagnosed with SAD. You can then own any format of incandescent bulb you need all over your house.

When your great great grandfather died, did he have a closet full of buggy whips?

The problem with your theory is that light therapy involves types of fluorescent light, not incandescent light. There are no makes of full spectrum incandescent bulbs, and more advanced therapeutic options, are also fluorescent.

“Not if you have been diagnosed with SAD {sic}. You can then own any format of incandescent bulb you need all over your house.”

I’m not all that sure why people with SSAD want incandescent bulbs all over their house and I really don’t want to know, but I don’t think they should have privileges simply because of their SSAD.

Only a socialist democrat, or an environmental wacko would feel good about buying light bulbs that cost 500% more and do the same things as the original item.

There was no need to outlaw buggy whips to make them obsolete. If anything is likely to go obsolete, it would be florescnts themselves, replaced by LEDs. BTW, my sister-in-law has a condition that makes her sensitive to florescents, giving her severe headaches.

So, will there be light bulb subsidies for the poor who cannot afford to replace the inexpensive bulb in the socket with a $7.00 green squirrelly tube?

Well, I’m sorry, but I’m one of about ten million who legally use incandescent bulbs to keep my wellhouse above freezing. Heaters are a fire threat, they burn up wellhouses reguarly.

My lights fail, my pipes freeze and my well pumps water for two other households than me. One is on oxygen.
