Gingrich’s Endorsement And The Failings Of The Conservative Media

Gingrich’s Endorsement And The Failings Of The Conservative Media By Jennifer Rubin The conservative punditocracy is all aflutter today about the Union Leader’s endorsement of Newt Gingrich. Both the newspaper’s publisher, Joseph McQuaid, and those chattering about the endorsement offer the latest evidence to the conservative media being downright daft in this primary — a result, I suspect, of their increasingly self-segregation, which abets tone-deafness.

Let’s start with the endorsement itself. The editorial board’s rationale is based on the conviction that Gingrich is “bold” — I kid you not — and that he should be recognized for “bringing in the first Republican House in 40 years and by forging balanced budgets and even a surplus despite the political challenge of dealing with a Democratic President.” In short, this is another case of selective conservative amnesia.

The endorsement includes no recognition that Gingrich was creamed by Bill Clinton in the budget standoff. No mention of the ethics violations and the penchant to compromise away conservative principles. No mention of the House Republicans’ attempted coup against Gingrich’s leadership. And no mention of his post-speakership, which consisted primarily of feathering his nest by shilling for causes and interests the Union Leader opposed (e.g. ethanol subsidies, Freddie Mac, Medicare Part D, immigration reform).

Even sillier than the ill-reasoned endorsement is the reaction of right-leaning pundits who find this development meaningful — decisive, even! Good grief. While the newspaper is New Hampshire’s largest, it has a lousy track record of picking winners. (It has previously endorsed Steve Forbes and Pat Buchanan.) Moreover, conservative pundits are usually the ones warning Republicans that newspaper endorsements are declining in value in recent years.

“Isn't she the token conservative at the ComPost?”

Actually Jennifer Rubin is a neocon. If an issue doesn't involve Israel, it's not on her radar screen.

I championed the idea of Newt's over all debating skills, pretty solid over all understanding of how the Federal government works, and in some cases, strong conservative parts such as maintaining a strong military, his knowledge base on history at large, especially recent history as how it pertains to American foreign affairs, the inner workings of how the House and Senate operate, blah, blah, blah, as representing a strong candidate that could beat the socialist usurper now residing in the White House.
But I totally admit my dismay at how much is coming out about his shortcomings as one (Newt) who pretends to be a solid conservative. But then equal in alarm. I see no one other then perhaps Cain, and he is slipping downward, who could provide a successful challenge and potential win over the ice cream sucking golfer who bows to the rest of the world and plays careful attention to obeying his sundry mix of socialist and communist advisers.
I in all humility continue to think my often descriptions as how the damaged canoe with lost paddles rams hard against the rocks in the deep sets of rapids with a soon arrival at the final huge standing wave front before it flies off the huge water fall, IS entirely pertinent to the current scenario we find our selves in.
Like most here and at other conservative web sites and organizations in general. There is little comfort to be taken in recent developments. I have to hit the rack shortly. Do have a pleasant upcoming day.

Both Mitt and Newt would be better presidents than Obama. However you are correct, the MSM and $1 Billion smear machine will shoot those two down like sitting ducks.

There are 700 page dossier’s each, ready for attack in the Obama re-election war room on Mitt & Newt, after nomination, complete with extremely effective commercials showing on video the opposite viewpoints enunciated by Mitt & Newt, on important issues such as healthcare mandates, illegals, global warming etc. Newt’s adulteries will be on national television. Mitt’s strapping his dog on top of his car will drive pet lovers crazy.

What are they going to shoot down Cain with? 11 second delay in answering question on Libya? All Cain needs to do is ask how many jobs will be created by in-depth details of situation on ground in Libya. How about Bialek allegations? Have y’all noticed Gloria has been awfully quiet since Herman hired Lin Wood? Is Gloria afraid of defending multi-million dollar defamation law suits?
