Newt, Mitt, Freddie, Bain-kruptcy: Newt Teaches About The Logical Fallacy of Guilt by Association
Bloggers and Personal ^ | 14 Dec 11 | Xzins

Posted on 12/14/2011 11:09:11 AM PST by xzins

Brit Hume breathlessly spun for Mitt Romney one more time. How dare Newt Gingrich complain about capitalism and Bain Capital bankrupting companies in its pursuit of greater profits! How dare Newt Gingrich not see the good that Mitt has brought via Staples, a store that sells...well...staples?

And now Brit Hume's colleages at the Fox News Network (We Romney, You Decide) are all repeating the GOP establishment talking point: Newt challenged capitalism.

But, he didn't.

He challenged the logical fallacy of "guilt by association". The GOP was charging Gingrich with making money off of Freddie and Fannie as if that meant he were part of Freddie and Fannie and their decisions. He isn't and he wasn't.

Freddie/Fannie bought Newt's knowledge. That is what "consultants" sell. And, Newt is no more a participant in their meltdown than were any lawyers they hired vbecause they knew the law. Lawyers sell legal knowledge. Newt sells system and experiential knowledge. Freddie and Fannie's problem was not that they hired consultants. It was that they bought unsecured loans as if they were gold.

But, Newt was declared guilty of all the crimes committed by Freddie and Fannie because he was an outside contractor paid by them. That is the fallacy of "guilt by association."

When charged by Romney with being guilty by association, Gingrich simply returned the favor. For, if guilt by association works with Freddie, then it is also true for bankruptcies. Romney, you see, had engaged in the corporate takeovers, infamous not too many years ago, that were designed purely to close businesses, pillage their assets, and cast away the crumbs.

That was Romney's bread and butter.....IF...guilt by association is a valid logical argument.

And it is for the goose, if it is for the gander.

If Newt is guilty by association, then Romney is as well. Guilty of pillage, of raping retirement funds, of turning workers out onto the streets, of throwing pensioners and investors under the bus.

Exactly correct and those who are condemning Newt for his riposte to Mitt's intellectually dishonest attack are guilty themselves of intellectual dishonesty--or just plain ignorance.

Britt, are you paying attention?

I think part of Newt's problem with these parrots of the press is that they are not used to dealing with a man who thinks complex thoughts. They are used to dealing with candidates who use simplistic, sloganeering arguments and who only touch the surface of the problems America is facing. Things like Newt's reductio ad absurdum response to Mitt's smear completely escape their comprehension.

I thought Newt's response was perfect and devastating.

Fox News is doing the heavy lifting on this made up, going nowhere issue. It is the most discusting thing I have seen over the many years I have been loyal to that network.

That loyalty is being systematically destroyed.

Maybe it’s time to accept the Libs label: Faux News.

How about they both stop arguing about who has ill gotten gains, and both explain how they intend to dismantle F & F and how soon after taking office they will begin. I’d rather see an argument about who could do it faster.

I agree with your assessment, but I still wish he had not done that. Yes, he was logically turning the argument on Mitt and yes, he did so brilliantly. Except, he was caught on tape using the words of the left, so I think the price of winning that little exchange was too high.

Especially since Romney’s campaign will fade away on its own IMO.

Yep. Like your hanging out with me.

Exactly why should the President be trying to dismantle Fox & Friends?!!?

Do I really need a sarcasm tag?

I am in marketing and was a history minor in college. I have tons of clients lining up to pay me $1.6 million to visit my office for 30 minutes just to shoot the sh!t./sarc.

Anyone who believes Freddie Mac wasn't buying influence probably also believes Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a genius.

Britt Hume who I used to have some respect for has just been outrageous lately. His attacks on Newt Gingrich are over the top. I’m going to have to start calling him Tokyo Hume soon.

You must have missed the part in which Newt Gingrich left the House about a dozen years ago. He has no influence to sell.

He sells knowledge, the same as a lawyer sells knowledge.

He also sells the ability to create a narrative (history). For the uninitiated, narratives, narrative therapy, etc., are the cutting edge of opinion research and therapy.

People pay thousands to therapists to help them re-story their lives to more more acceptable, true, or energizing themes.

Again, though, NEWT GINGRICH has been out of power for years and years, his enemies in the GOP have succeeded him in the House, and he has NO INFLUENCE to sell.

And yes, marketing firms make multi-millions of dollars for re-storying.

WHACK!

Gingrich earned his money,

No need to return it.

The high crimes are the bonuses paid to the CEO and others at Barney Frank's institution.
