Perry on Haley: I'd rather call in the Marines
Politico ^ | December 16, 2011 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Rick Perry shrugged off his fellow southern state governor, South Carolina's Nikki Haley, deciding to back rival Mitt Romney, in an interview with CNN's John King.

"That’s one vote, I’ll be real honest with you, I’ve got a medal of honor recipient Jim Livingston, who endorsed me on the deck of the Yorktown last week, and you know, no offense but I like those guys that have that type of long-time record of endorsements," said Perry, according to POLITICO's Emily Schultheis. "I greatly respect Gov. Haley, but if I had to pick between the two, love having those veterans stand up and say this is the guy, this is the man for the job."

Perry also again dinged Ron Paul for suggesting that there is no real evidence Iran is moving to acquire nukes, saying, "There should be no space between the United States and Israel, and I was just really taken aback by Ron Paul’s almost nonchalant statement about, you know, let the mullahs go, there’s not any evidence that they’re getting a bomb. That’s certainly not my information, I’m relying on some pretty wise and plugged-in people – I talk to John Bolton on a regular basis and the ambassador is greatly concerned about Iran."

BELIEVE ME, neither Romney nor Perry are my men for this job, but BOY ol’ Gov. Rick sure gobsmacked both him and her (Nikki and Mitts) upside their political heads with this good one. LOL.

I’ll bet the GOP establishment did the BIG “carrot and stick” treatment on Haley.... and it paid off.

Just 3 seconds of Perry’s latest ad changed my vote.

It’s the point where he says “I won’t let the big govt liberals ruin this country.” So, we need to ***get the word out*** on THIS 30 second ad:

Yeah, with her and O'Donnell I think the TEA Party got suckered. What a couple of frauds looking for power. Good for Perry, the Marines are Always Faithful, politicians looking for the spotlight rarely are.

I expect Nikki to really feel the heat.

Bobby Jindal endorses on conviction unlike Haley whose reasoning was a joke. My brother the Mitt supporter yucked it up over this endorsement since Perry campaigned for her and so did Palin.

I guy I know said "Wow, Haley really jumped the shark on that one" and she did. I wonder if the Republican governors got together and sent her out as a trial balloon since she's a rookie.

Hi Hokestuk! Welcome to FR (I’ll say it before someone else makes the “noobie” comment).

Thanks for the LINK.

Bobby Jindal endorses on conviction ......

As does the governor of Kansas, Sam Brownback. Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval also endorsed Rick Perry.

Very true. I am waiting with baited breath for the Haley Barbour endorsement but my gut says he's working behind the scenes for Perry.

Isn't it funny how all during this campaign the candidates have tried to mimic Perry's states rights platform but have failed miserably? Perry is only getting stronger at projecting that message.

When Chris Wallace tried to zing Perry on Texas tax policy toward energy companies, he knocked out of the park. I believe that one statement opened the eyes of quite a few voters in Iowa.

I don’t think it’s going to pay off for romney OR Haley. It won’t make romney any more acceptable and it probably ticked off more than half Haley’s TEA party contituency. It was just stupid.
She would have been better off endorsing the man in the moon.

When the choices are newt and romney... Perry, Bachmann and Santorum look pretty good. All three have flaws but none of those three are nearly as flawed as newt and romney.

She was specifically pushed over the top in her election by the TEA Party. Now to sell out so quickly. Too bad.

Perry is hitting SC and Iowa with a 2nd Amendment mailer that is very powerful.

I have been very frustrated with the lack of conviction on the 2nd Amendment amongst the front runners.

To me if you have conviction on the 2nd you at least own one gun.

Perry is noting his legislative record toward solidifying the right to carry, reciprocity with 40 other states, castle doctrine, right to carry without a license in your vehicle, illegal for businesses to override the concealed carry laws for their business.

Perry takes the 2nd as seriously as the 1st. Only dictators fear an armed populace. Perry has always encouraged a well armed Texas citizenry because it is "necessary for the security of a free State".

Interesting point about mimicing Perry. They must be reading his book, listening to him on the stump and going over his published policy statements. I pick up Perry’s positions on many things coming out of the other candidates’ mouths in the debates - especially on states’ rights, jobs, cutting regulations, litigation and taxes, as well as border and illegal immigration problems.

The big difference is, Gov. Perry has already worked these problems, is fighting the feds in the courts on many of these issues and has the working blueprint to show for it.

That’s why they’re looking over Perry’s shoulder and copying his answers.

You are so correct. I am officially in the Perry camp now. As far as I’m concerned, he’s the one I think has a proven record. Sure, he has his flaws, but, not as many as those considered the front runners.

Besides, even though Newt is a great debater, I have to agree with what some others have said - he’s just another old, white, male Republican, and like it or not - a lot of people look at the outside. A lot want the better looking candidate - and that’s why I fear that Newt would lose against obama. Not that Zero s good looking, but, he isn’t fat and pudgy or old looking - yet!
