Same reason that the amount of wisdom and knowledge desired by the populace is inversely proportional to the availability of wisdom and knowledge. People value what is rare. Being as common as dirt, knowledge and understanding is treated like dirt. No respect.

The entire sum of human knowledge and insight is literally available at anyone's fingertips. When educational opportunities need to be sought after with all one's heart, they are appreciated and guarded. Now? Why read what the old dead guys wrote when tweeting about breakfast is more important. :-/
