Socialists in the Family (Vanity Alert)
me | 12-28-2011 | self

Posted on 12/28/2011 9:35:53 AM PST by Springfield Reformer

Pardon the vanity, but I hate living in Illinois, and I just have to vent about it a bit …

So I go to the annual extended family Christmas gathering, and this year, because I am a card-carrying Tea-Partier, my two socialist aunts team up to give me a book called Plot Against America, by Philip Roth. This is a book that basically says the people in flyover country who are not urban liberals are naturally prone to become Nazis, given the right political environment. Roth makes this point by hypothesizing an America where FDR loses the 1940 election to Republican Lindberg, with the consequence that America starts going Nazi until FDR comes out of retirement to save the day. Yeesh! Wrong on so many levels.

So these are my relatives. Socialists, including one open communist, who still worship at the feet of FDR, and who really think they’re trying to “save” me from the evils of the Tea Party, where we embrace such dreadful ideas as fiscal responsibility and energy independence and holding our politicians to their responsibility to uphold the Constitution, not because we actually believe any of that, but because we secretly all want to shave our heads bald and paint synagogues with swastikas.

This experience has seriously challenged my desire to continue residing in this state. At times it seems it is just not worth it. Even my very lovely and intelligent daughter cannot find a decent young man who isn’t either a liberal or a baseball cap-wearing, alcohol-scented, pickup truck driving serial womanizer.

So I’m wondering, how many of my fellow FReepers have these kinds of combative family situations over politics, and if so, how do you handle it? And I’m also curious to know how many of you would consider moving from a more liberal to a more conservative state, what would be your threshold for taking action, and what states would you consider moving to. Somebody talk me back from the ledge…

Jump! Jump!

Move to where you feel comfortable. Life is too short to stay where you are miserable.

Go to Texas. Not to the Austin area which is infested with liberal cockroaches, but all the rest of Texas. If you can manage to get used to the climate then I guarantee you will not find any nicer people than Texans, and they have a very friendly business climate including no state income tax.

Funny, FDR was a fan of Dictators

Roosevelt never had much use for Hitler, but Mussolini was another matter. "'I don't mind telling you in confidence,' FDR remarked to a White House correspondent, 'that I am keeping in fairly close touch with that admirable Italian gentleman'" (p. 31). Rexford Tugwell, a leading adviser to the president, had difficulty containing his enthusiasm for Mussolini's program to modernize Italy: "It's the cleanest … most efficiently operating piece of social machinery I've ever seen. It makes me envious" (p. 32, quoting Tugwell).

Get out of Illinois while you still can. The only state worse than IL is Michigan.

For the sake of familial harmony, I’ve learned to smile and keep my yap shut. The furthest I’ll venture is to answer: “I could agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong.” That usually redirects the conversation topic, after a pregnant moment of stunned silence.

BUMP!! Spent a majority of my adult life there, and the good Lord willing and the job climate cooperating - I'll return there again someday!

I hate to say it, but Illinois is a lost cause.

Ask them:

Which of Obama’s policies are inconsistent with destroying America?

I live about 75 miles south of you in Alton. I had to go to the ER when I first moved here and after the initial triage, a woman came in and started asking questions about whether “I felt safe at home” and did I feel threatened by any family members”. My new doctor told me later that it is asked of everyone who comes to the ER, and that they get extra funding for referring folks to a domestic violence agency. He further said (he is one of us, Im sure)that some of the intiatives are nothing more than funding channels and do more harm than good..

Well I used to have to put up with this stuff from my worthless bil, but he got caught by my niece early this year with another lady and my sister dumped him to curb.

I do have to deal with my parents exposure to MSM as their major news source, and normally dad will listen as long as I don’t get into rant mode (then he just changes the subject). They seem to think there is an equivalence between the tea party and the owsers (sigh).

If your looking for relocation options Indiana isn’t bad, just stay out of the Gary area and avoid Bloomington.

Parallel problem for me. I am the right-wing, gun-toting Tea Party redneck in a family of liberal, suburban guilt-ridden Jewish folks from the NYC area. I left the area more than 30 years ago and eventually settled in NH.

But I do have to go back for holidays, etc. and have basically learned to keep my mouth shut about politics because there's nothing to be gained by arguing with family. They know where I stand: all they have to do is look at the bumper stickers on my SUV. Whenever Obama's name comes up, I just smile, close my eyes and picture him in a prison jumpsuit.

Move - and the family will follow you!!

Thankfully, my family is not the problem. However, if you are close to retirement - and choose moving to a warm climate (the South) - you will soon find yourself surrounded by Northern liberals. They love the South for its low taxes and slow, laid back life - but give no credit to the locals (black & white) who have made the South such a welcoming & friendly place. Know-it-all, socialist snobs never change - they just get old and more obnoxious.

First of all, let me disavow you completely of the whole red state/blue state notion. The difference between the reddest state and the bluest state is a matter of percentage points. Now that percentage can have a great effect when it comes to how things are run, because a few percentage points is often all takes to tip an election.

However, when it comes to the people you meet in social situations. You’ll find conservatives and liberals everywhere. No place has a lock on, or locked out either. Besides, your family will be your family, no matter where you move.

Personally, I’ve never let political differences bother me.
