Tech Help Again, Please

Running XP. Installed Netgear wireless card WPN 311. System indicates signal strength from my home network as "excellent."

Problem: will not connect to the network. Says "cannot acquire network address." How can I make the connection and make it stay?

Tried "other features" from the XP disk, got error message: "already installed in computer." Tried for about two hours using every set-up wizard. No go.

Thanks.

Tried the NetGear help site?

Always was helpful to me, when I had a NetGear router.

is your router supported by your network card?

Generally, when you install a wirless network card, you have to restart the pc before it will see the connection.

Sounds like the PC wireless card and your router are trying to negotiate using two different types of encryption.

Check to be sure both are using WPS or WEP, etc. (I'd stay away from WEP, though). Make sure *everything* on each end of the connection is identical.

Reboot the router once.
Reboot the PC once.

Ok, now that we’ve done that,

Go here, download the correct stuff , you most probably have the 2.0 model... check the side of the box and the label on the card itself to confirm...
if you have the latest version of the software on the CD that came with the card, then skip ahead to the bottom of the second link...

http://support.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2621

Follow these directions:
Make sure you uninstall any version you installed with the CD that came with the card...
http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/872

Use the netgear connection software, it’s very good, very convenient, and easier than the built-in WinXP wireless network connection manager.

Reboot. If that doesnt work check your AP for its SSID.

Win7 makes WiFi provisioning dead simple. With XP the card vendor has to fill in all the missing software for link negotiation. Some vendors do it better than others.

If you see an SSID and still no joy its probably a WPA auth problem.

Another tech question for you guys that obviously know more than I.

Is it possible to install and run Outlook 97 (from Office 97 Pro) onto computer with Win 7 OS?

Turn off your pc. Unplug or turn off your router. Wait five minutes. Turn on your router. Wait for all the lights on the router to steady. Now turn on your pc and try again.

Sounds like your router is not recognizing the wireless card.

On my new desktop computer with wireless, the initial structions said to push the button on the router for it to find the pc’s wireless. I did. It took a few moments, but I got a pop-up message that the router and wireless were talking.

Otherwise, you have to enter the router password into the wireless set-up.

Make sure your computer does not have an internal wireless device.

If it does it would be competing with the card and neither is usable. Either use the internal device or disable it so your card owns the internet connection.

Probably.

When I was installing programs on the new desktop, I wanted just the html editor portion of the old MS FrontPage (98).

When I tried to install, I would get an error that the program was too old and I needed to get a newer version.

I finally just copied the Frontpage directory from my XP machine to the new Win7 machine. When I tried to run it, I got an error that a certain .dll was missing. I found that .dll on the XP machine, copied it to the Win7 machine, and now FrontPage html editor works.

Sorry--I don't run Windows. I know it's a legitimate question as I've seen issues with Win7/Vista and older software.

I just don't know as I use a *real* OS. <grin>

No problem with Outlook 97. I use Office 97 Pro on two Win7 systems (one 32 bit and the other 64 bit).

Thanks!
I shoulda tried running my Office 97 Pro before buying new Office, which I do not like. Naturally MS says you can not run it on W7, sorta like Doctors saying vitamens are not good as it gets in the pocketbook.

I would assume office 97 will work fine. I installed and am running office 93 on my windows 7 system.

So you felt compelled to post, on a thread specifically asking for technical help with a Windows box, simply to state that you don't use Windows?

Are you always so helpful?

Change your wireless router to use no authentication. Get connected from your client like this and then go back and change the router to use authentication and select the client manually to match the authentication type you selected on the router.

Some older driver software for the client cards don’t support the newer authentication protocols. Did you have this card working at one time on this XP box? Check the Netgear website and download the latest drivers for your card.
