Is Rick Perry the Iowa Dark Horse?
The Atlantic ^ | December 31, 2011 | Molly Ball

....... Perry is still the affable governor of Texas, and voters still want to like him, which has become easier since he's mostly stopped screwing up all the time...

...He tells the crowd that the small towns of Iowa are just like the small towns of Texas, where he grew up: "The same people, the same values."

As the days to the caucuses wane, Perry has things other candidates would kill for: Crowds who want to meet him, ads all over the airwaves, a decent ground organization, an anti-Washington message people are hungry for, and terrific hair. The question is whether it's too little, too late, to get through the crowded pack ahead of him.

Several Perry-inclined voters in Boone said they were former Herman Cain supporters, which helps explain Perry's uptick.

Marti Melton-Streeter, the former GOP chairwoman in Boone County, said she couldn't support Romney because of his health-care record, and she's frightened by Ron Paul's foreign policy views. Perry, she recently decided, deserves a second chance with voters.

"I'd really like to see Rick Perry come out of Iowa. I think he needs that opportunity on the national level," she said. "I know there have been missteps along the way, but his philosophy is what we need in a candidate."

Carolyn Erickson, an 81-year-old from Ogden, thought she'd made up her mind to support Romney, but Perry changed her mind.

"I was what you call impressed" with Romney when she saw him Thursday, she said. "Today, I'm excited. I feel a passion for [Perry]."

But at least one audience member experienced a different conversion. Loren Nalean, 61, a Boone attorney, said Perry convinced him to caucus -- for Romney.

"I just think he's more intelligent and more sophisticated than Governor Perry," he said.

I wish that Perry would make a comeback - but he won’t. He went in without an organization, without a plan and he was woefully unprepared. It’s our loss. But his fault.

Stay tuned. He’s connected with Iowans in the way none other can, a son raised on the farm, who returned to farm after his military service.

I attended a Perry event on Thursday night. While I like his message, he is definitely not a very good speaker. He needs to really polish his performance and I don't believe there is time for that.

Here is just one example. During his presentation, he said that regulations need to be cut, but then when the first questioner asked him how he would deal with wall street, he answered "Regulate them". Later after a follow up question he corrected himself and said that the regulations were there already but needed to be enforces.

I really like him, but needs he's not ready.

Zero would have us lighting our farts to keep warm in the dark after the EPA blacked us out.

Sorry No that won't be allowed. After they solve the cow flatulence problem, you are next on their list, I hear.

You mean the BIG GAS producing intestinal flora I sourced (well actually they found me first) are subject to emissions review and permitting purview?

No fireworks allowed in Lakeway—but I just heard something that was either a giant firecracker—or a gun shot—and it sounded awfully close!

LOL! (I think!)

We will be seeing why he was considering the TTC idea very soon here in Texas.

Perry was trying to address a problem we in Texas will soon be realizing in that with the completion of the Panama Expansion Project, Texas roadways and ports will soon be overwhelmed with over 200% increase in cargo traffic and railway transport in the next 10 years. He was trying to get ahead of the game and get these roads, railways, pipelines and utilities built to deal with this and all the while by not increasing Taxes or using Washington DC to do it.

He did have the vision to be looking way way ahead.

But, when he saw it was not a popular idea with us Texans, he did indeed drop it like a hot potato.

I hope we don’t regret it in the next few years. I have been seeing newspaper articles addresses issues already.

The Houston Port is going to have to deal with 11 million 20’ cargo container units coming in compared to 1.8 million now.

Perry did sign HB2702 to address the private property owners and strengthen protections. The bill also insured that the roads that were not toll roads now would remain toll free.

He had private investors willing to pay the initial investment of over 7 Billion dollars with no upfront costs to the taxpayers.

Before that law, the private landowners were offered either
a lump sum payment or long term royalty payments like those in the oil and gas industry. But HB2702 gave extra assurances. Example:

The state had to offer to purchase all of the tract if it was left with little or no value.

If the property loses value as a result of the TTC, the
state had to provide compensation for damages.

The State was prohibited under this law from condemning land along the Corridor.

The State was prohibited from taking groundwater.

Commercials development was limited to only gas stations and convenience stores.

BTW I was mad at him too because I had property that would have been effected. But recently when I did some research into it, I did understand his motive and thinking.

Perry has nothing to do with Texas being top notch. It is a great state, and was a great state before he was governor.

Yes, Texas is a great state and has been for some time.

You must admit though that Texas under the leadership of Gov. Rick Perry, has done much better than most under these terrible economic times.

You are so right Chasaway.

Some people have beat that dead horse into a pulp and can’t give it up.

Face it, it’s all they’ve got.

They are so sensitive and got their little feelins hurt.

It is very playground.

You must be one of those Austin Republicans. They hate Perry because he’s way too conservative for them.

What do you suggest, my friend.

I suggest Newt, Santorum, Huntsman and Michele step aside and support Perry.

Do you have some other idea?

The U.S. was a great country until Obama came along.

A good governor keeps a state going and makes it better.

Perry has done that.
