Police Go to Wrong House, Kill Family's German Shepherd
German Shepherd Examiner ^ | January 18th, 2012 | Penny Eims

Posted on 01/18/2012 8:16:34 PM PST by chrisinoc

DeKalb County, GA - On Tuesday night, a DeKalb County police officer went to a family's home on Silva Court in response to a domestic dispute call.

When the officer went into the family's garage, he encountered a German shepherd who was on a chain.

Upon seeing a stranger approach, the German shepherd lunged - the officer's response was to shoot and kill the dog.

Tragically, after the damage was done, it was discovered that the responding police officer had actually gone to the wrong house.

Right now, the officer is not facing any charges - there will be an internal investigation.

If a cop gets shot after killing a dog I will have no sympathy.

“The dog was on a chain and the cop still shot the dog. What??”

A moving target would have been too much of a challenge.

"Unfortunately, the headline is becoming that commonplace--as is the wrong address thingy."

I don't know about where you live, but here the city has all sorts of owner, address, structure and parcel shape data on-line for all to see. They likely have more for internal use. The wrong address thing should be a less not more frequent event.

In my experience a chained dog in a garage is not a good sign. I’m pretty sure the dog was significantly smarter and less violent than the owner.....

There is a reason the police use GSD’s. They are a weapon.

I beg to differ....with TRAINING they can be used as a weapon.

I daresay that a cocker spaniel, chained, in the garage, would've lunged at a stranger!!!

The cop probably had too many donuts and knew he couldn’t outrun the dog to the end of the chain even with a head start.

Damn skippy. It’s bound to happen. Person hears a shot in the garage and the yelp of the door. Door gets flung open and the 12 gauge unloaded in to the man in the garage before the home owner realizes it’s a cop.

It is bound to happen at some point.

Now.. would the home owner go to jail for attempted (or successful) manslaughter?

Was this chained dog a problem? It appears to be standard police practice to shoot any dog on the premises at an address to which they have been called. Or am I overstating the case?

Cops should not consider them selves immune from the laws covering home invasion. Any cop shooting my dog will get expert return fire. They could have called me on the phone to resolve any issue. Imagine I opened fire on a police dog. Ditto to the statist money and power grabbers.

Anybody that takes that bet is an idiot. Cops are like James Bond 007-they have a license to kill...and they will.

I fully agree it should happen less often, everywhere, considering all the online information, databases and the like.

That, however, implies competence and enough 'give-a-d@mn' to get things right in the first place.

I think we are seeing less of that aspect, and that is something all the tools in the world won't offset.

“After the shooting, the officer was seen being taken away in an ambulance”

Sudden cardiac death, hopefully.

I wonder what happens if somebody’s support dog is shot by a cop?

I know I have a tag with the 24/7 ADA legal defense sharks on the boy’s collar.

[just in case the cops miss all the big ass patches on his working harness]

Don't be too sorry for the officer, he was most likely just covering his bases for his report and the reason the dog needed to be eliminated.

It -always- does.

In 1994, I was slammed face down over the hood of a city cop’s cruiser and brazenly groped, dry humped and molested during a ‘search stop’ which proved to be bogus.

Despite the testimonies of the other county sheriffs and state troopers who witnessed this mock rape, the city pig got *nothing*...not even a reprimand.

I suspect the phrase “internal investigation” is an inside joke.

Your right-I’m just much more familiar with 90lb+ GSD’s. Make no mistake—I’m incensed by the stupid abuse and killing of good dogs doing what nature or training have directed them to do. Hell the NFL pays a lot of money to a stone cold evil slimeball QB that did that for fun. As per your comment—a cocker spaniel would damage your ankle a territorially motivated GSD would crush your ankle, then your femur and then....as I said in my previous post—a moron owned this dog—you will assure bad manners by taking a really smart motivated dog and frustrate them with chaining.
