Slope Dope: Mammoth Mountain Military Operation

Mammoth Mountain couldn’t have asked for better weather for next week’s Operation Mountain Freedom, in which injured active duty servicemen and women and veterans learn how to ski or snowboard with the help of adaptive equipment.

Since 2007, the resort, along with Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra, has hosted the military and their families for a week of lessons, motivational speakers and community-building events.

“It’s a gateway to learning what is possible,” says Cara Leonard, associate director of the nonprofit. “So many people that come through this program are able to look at what they accomplished, whether it’s skiing or snowboarding, and take those skills into the rest of their lives.”
