White House Moves Forward with Science, Tech, Math Education Plan
U.S. Trade & Aid Monitor ^ | Jan. 27, 2012 | Steve Peacock

The Obama Adminstration is forging ahead with its plan to help train science, technology, and mathematics (STM) educators to heighten the nation's ability to compete globally -- not the nation he leads, that is, but the nation of Egypt.

As U.S. Trade & Aid Monitor reported last year, the U.S. Agency for International Devlopment (USAID) put out a call to contractors to carry out the training endeavor, which would bring dozens of Egyptian teachers and administrators to the U.S.. The goal of the training is to send the cadre back to Egypt, where ostensibly they would be better prepared to participate in that nation's expansion of schools that cater to gifted & talented STM students. (Monitor; Oct. 29, 2011).

According to a recent search of the Federal Business Opportunities database, however, no contract awards had ever been granted following the release of that solicitation (#263-12-0001). USAID this past week issued an identical solicitation under a new project number (#RFP-263-12-0020), accompanied by a formal Request for Proposals.

As the RFP points out, the initiative follows through on a promise that President Obama made to the Egyptians in 2009 during a speech at Cairo University. That trip to Egypt, as he said, was designed:

to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based on mutual interest and mutual respect, and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles -- principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.

Vendor proposals are due Feb. 14.

Didn’t Egypt just stop 6 Americans from leaving?

Why would anyone want to go there?

Where the hell are they going to come up with teachers who are smart enough to teach “Science, Tech and Math”? Those days are over. Those teachers are all gone.

Those poor Egyptians. What did they do to deserve being saddled with the failed educational policies of this country?
