A creative Vermont inmate has modified the state symbol that adorns police cruisers to include an image of a pig, said state officials.
One of the spots on the cow in the Vermont state crest has been changed to be the shape of a pig. The car decals are made by prisoners in St. Albans in a shop that also make state stationery and license plates.
In the 1960s, the term "pig" came to be used in derogatory fashion to describe police officers.
Lt. Paul White, station commander in Middlesex, said there are at least three of these decals on cruisers at his barracks. He said the full inventory hadn't been made. He said he was alerted by the fleet administrator who said it was first detected by a state trooper in southern Vermont.
Vermont Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn told the Burlington Free Press this afternoon that he became aware of the alteration earlier in the day and had asked Corrections Commissioner Andrew Pallito to explain the situation.
Flynn said initial information indicates about three dozen of the modified decals are on state vehicles.
The disclosure brought chuckles to both Flynn and Senate President Pro Tempore John Campbell, D-Windsor, who are both former police officers.
"This is not as offensive as it would have been years ago. We can see the humor," Flynn said. He said the artist has talents that could be used elsewhere. "If that person had used some of that creativeness he or she would not have ended up inside."
I disagree with the connotation but have o see the humor from an inmates
Many years ago we had some enterprising inmates who altered the formula for the paint on our license tags. Two or three trips to the car wash and off it came. Drove the cops nuts.
Who squealed?
Imagine for a minute,,
that the government there saw this for the funny harmless prank it was.
Imagine that they left the stickers with the hidden pigs on the cars. Imagine that they chipped in and sent that inmate some first class BBQ pork sandwiches, and requested the future stickers he made them to please omit the pig.
Imagine that the leader there said he would never dream of wasting 800 taxpayer dollars to replace those stickers.
There was a time in this country that it woulda happened about like that.
Today, i am reminded of Natan Scharanski’s observation about oppressive governments. They ALL repress humor at their expense. The one thing their house of cards cannot stand is for people to laugh at their “serious” work.
I bet that inmate is a freakin’ hero on the inside. LOL
or they would have just started the internet meme and sold all the stickers they could print on eBay and used the money for something worthwhile
LOL,,, true. T-shirts, Hats, Coffee mugs. Vermont, it’s still not too late!
I miss that world.
That’s pretty funnty.
Well, I guess we can eliminate all the Muslim inmates as suspects.
Actually, though I am very, pro-law enforcement, I find this amusing. I salute the inmate for coming up with a very clever, funny, and totally harmless way to “stick it to the man”.
Yeah,, that “good sport” world. Reminds me of the photo of John Dillinger, no cuffs, standing there with him elbow on the shoulder of the prosecutor.
Thats what we’ve lost. So far Vermont hasn’t really been obnoxious about it i guess though.
Boris is now the hero of cell block D.
If a deputy and that was my patrol car, I would want to keep the logo!
I probably shouldn’t be laughing... but it is funny!
Could be in for counterfeiting? Those guys have great graphics skills.
Maybe the inmate thought PIG stood for Pride-Integrity-Guts. That’s what my trooper buddy use to say.
