Thrice-Married NPR Snob Garrison Keillor Mocks Newt Gingrich as a 'Polygamist'

Hypocrisy knows no bounds on the airwaves of National Public Radio, as their Minnesota-based star Garrison Keillor led off his latest edition of “A Prairie Home Companion” by mocking the GOP frontrunners as “the Mormon running against the polygamist.” This is a rich dig coming from Keillor, since he has been married three times – just as many times as Newt Gingrich.

This was within three minutes of the program starting, just a little partisan liberal boilerplate before the folksy singers get started. Keillor mocked conservatives like Romney and Gingrich for believing "the solution to our current dilemma is to go back to the policies that helped cause that dilemma...deregulation, cutting taxes, starting a new war, if possible."

Everything on NPR seems to tell the Republican to turn off the radio, this show was not produced for him. He's supposed to pay for it, but not suffer through it. The lecture commenced like this:

The Republican primaries go on – great fun – the Mormon running against the polygamist. And, uh – [Laughter and applause] Very interesting. Newt Gingrich, Speaker Newt Gingrich. There is nobody like him, nobody, absolutely nobody! He’s just a throwback right straight out of the 19th century. This guy is just unvarnished. He just talks and talks and talks. This guy does not need an airbag in his car. [Laughter] Got a windbag – it’s himself.

Then he shifted into mocking Mormonism alongside Gingrich again, how he unspools kooky lines without any consultants telling him what to say:

The line about Kenyan, anti-colonialist view of the world that he attributed to the President, that just came out of this guy. Or was presented to him, you know, by an angel in the woods of upstate New York, on a silver tablet, you know, in a language only Newt Gingrich can understand.

The guy who’s got the Vitalis – now, everything that he says is very well-calibrated, It’s like a fine racing engine – it’s jut you know, everything’s been tested, pre-tested, road-tested. Gone before focus groups and so on. Tested with little blue strips of paper, everything that he says. Newt Gingrich – wow! Whoa, it just flows out of him, the guy with the helmet hair. Just a wild, wild man.

They believe in the same things, you know, they believe in the Declaration of Independence, the Pledge of Allegiance, the U.S. Constitution, and they believe that the solution to our current dilemma is to go back to the policies that helped cause that dilemma. [Applause] Interesting thing – deregulation, cutting taxes, starting a new war, if possible.

He called the election the “Super Bowl for grown-ups” – that’s a pretty insulting put down of sports fans – and then said the country can survive just about anybody in the White House.

“this thing should not be mocking anyone”

Just wondering which creature would breed with this guy? He produced offspring?

I dated a girl from Midland and she could have fixed anything for dinner and I’d have loved it.

She knew how to cook, too. That’s been many years ago.

My mother’s side of the family were all from Texas. Great people.

I haven’t been able to stand that bastard ever since there was cheering on his stupid show when it was announced that Reagan had passed away.

Wow. I've never listened to "A Prairie Home Companion". Is that what's been going on during his show all these years... decades??

Man, that looks like a face created by Hollwood for a monster movie.

I thought his first book, Lake Woebegon, was sidesplitting funny. But several years ago a friend and I went to see him in Portland and it was bizarre...he sing songed a good portion of the performance and I could barely understand it.

Looks like Don Imus's imperfect doppelganger to me.

Since I'm sure this douche bag supports Gay Marriage, why would he have a problem with Polygamy?

The more the merrier, right?

.

Garrison had a great radio voice, about 20 years ago ...

Nowadays, he sounds like a "very old guy", his diction is off ...

and those "Prarie Home Companion" radio skits are effectively NPR "fund raisers" for the (very old) liberal Hubert Humprey fans ... who were big fans of the "golden age of radio" ...

Finally ... he's obtuse and mocks Christianity ...

I guess "one out of four" is the best you can hope for from an ancient Minnesota Liberal, doncha know ?

He slurs and extends his words, too. I don't think it's due to his stroke. I think it may be intentional, to sound more erudite.

I used to listen to him about once a year (now I don't listen at all, even though I grew up near what is now called Lake Wobegone Trail). His show seemed to have a new material half life of about a year. This means that after one year, about half of the show content would be new. The other half would be the same old songs and comments from earlier shows. It's interesting to contrast this with Rush. Rush's content half life is about an hour. This with no support staff doing research. Prairie Home has a staff of about 20, and only one hour a week of show, yet it can only manage to generate an occasional new thought.
