A billboard "welcoming" illegal aliens to Florida and sarcastically thanking Gov. Rick Scott appeared on Interstate 75 Wednesday.
Produced by Floridians for Immigration Enforcement, the billboard calls out Scott for the state's failure to adopt an E-Verify law.
"This is a wake-up call for Governor Scott, who promised Floridians he would work to get mandatory E-Verify in the state to protect our legal workers," said Jack Oliver, legislative director of the group that goes by the name FLIMEN.
The 40-foot-by-10-foot illuminated billboard is along I-75's southbound lanes between the Georgia border and I-10.
Georgia, along with neighboring Alabama and South Carolina, have all passed E-Verify laws.
House Bill 1315, sponsored by Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Port St. Lucie, would require private employers in Florida to run the names of new hires through the federal E-Verify system to determine eligibility for employment.
The bill has failed to get a committee hearing. Scheduled for four committee stops, it is all but dead this session.
Last year, the Senate passed a watered-down E-Verify measure, but the House never took it up. A companion House bill by Rep. Will Snyder, R-Stuart, was not heard.

Rick Scott could want all the immigration reform he likes...it’ll (sadly) never get through the legislature.
Why? Because the *tourist* industry employees lots of immigrants to clean their hotels.
I wonder if the business that starts with a “D”, and ends with a “Y” and in between has an “isne” has anything to do with it.
I'm wondering why they are blaming Rick Scott. Do they not know any better?
No, they have a point: Scott *did* campaign on an Arizona style type law. I wish he would be a bit more aggressive in pushing for it...but maybe after he got elected, the reality sunk in: Florida is not Arizona....and the legislative leaders/tourist lobbyists told him how the cow eats the cabbage.
I think the mindset/culture in this state needs to change. Voters IN POLLS say they want an Arizona-style law...whether they will actively support someone who guns for it is another question.
I do know the lobbyists for “tourism” and “service industries” are very powerful...read anything you want into that...multi billion dollar companys, Indian casinos, retirement communities, etc. etc. etc. who MAY rely on illegal immigrants to do their labor/construction, etc.
It sounds to me like you have a good analysis of the problem. Perhaps they should put up some billboards across from the businesses that are hiring illegals.
Oh yes, “they” do know better.
But “they” really hate Rick Scott.
It seriously messes with “their” minds that we Florida voters actually elected a man to be our governor who is not a career politician.
God forbid that “we, the people” would elect an outsider to high political office, to try to start cleaning up the dark swamp of the Sunshine State!
After all, so many of us really want more taxpayer money spent on investments in “education”, railroads, and various insurance and banking industry schemes. (do I really need a sarcasm tag?)
