Mitt Romney to skip last pre-Super Tuesday debate [GA], and Rick Santorum likely to join him
The Washington Post ^ | February 16, 2012 | Aaron Blake, with Amy Gardner and Rosalind S. Helderman - The Fix

Mitt Romney will not take part in March 1 debate in Georgia, the final debate before Super Tuesday on March 6, his campaign said Thursday.

And Rick Santorum looks like he will sit it out as well.

[snip]

By not attending the debate, Romney’s campaign appears to be trying to de-emphasize its importance and instead relying on his overwhelming financial advantage on the airwaves. Romney’s campaign and a super PAC supporting him have all but drowned out their opponents with ads.

The debate is in the state Gingrich represented in the U.S. House, but both Romney and Santorum have signaled they will compete there.

At a campaign stop Thursday, Gingrich said that he will still participate in the debate and said that Romney’s decision is regrettable.

“The Romney model is to go to Wall Street and raise huge amounts of money to run negative ads,” Gingrich said. “I understand why having to defend that strategy is not something he’s very happy about.”

The March 1 debate is being co-sponsored by the Georgia GOP and CNN. There had a been a debate planned for March 5 in California, but it is no longer scheduled.

Romney will participate in a debate Wednesday in Arizona — the first since late January.

So basically, Ron Paul has to fend off Newt all by himself?

Well, it’ll be funny at least when Newt destroys him one on one.

New game?

Refuse to debate to keep Newt Gingrich from showing them up, i.e. REBOUNDING?

Too cute by half.

You think they aren’t scared to death of Newt? They know that the debates are where Newt does the best in getting his message out there.

I don’t like to use the word cowardly describing the both of them but I think the shoe fits, in this case.

Free air time for Newt and Ron. Bet they could use the time to good use.

They’re conceding Georgia to Newt to say the least.

Romney will only compete in debates with stacked crowds now. His campaign bought up all the tickets to the AZ debate.

Refuse to debate to keep Newt Gingrich from showing them up

Like he did in Florida -- twice?

[/s]

Gingrich revealed that he is fallible, as a debater.

Sean Hannity just announced their cancellation and said he “understands.”

Move along. Nothing to discuss.

If they were scared they wouldn’t debate next week. I think they are saying 20 debates is enough. Quite frankly, I don’t think we will ever see this many debates ever again. It is just a chance to ruin the candidates. Ever single candidate has both gotten stronger and weaker because of debates. Perry would still be in the run had it not been for debates. Gingrich would still be doing well if not for his poor debates in Florida. However, a debate had Gingrich win South Carolina. Too many debates. I actually think debates hurt Bachmann too.

They all should cancel, and flip CNN an "M.I.A.".

We don't need any more debates, not with the useless, off the wall questions being asked by the moderators.

I guess Newt will have to take care of that on Feb. 22.

If Romney and Santorum can freeze the race as it is, they can fall back on a Romney/Santorum ticket to keep anyone else from slipping in at a brokered convention.

He won't make that mistake again. He knows he's going up against a liar, even with another stacked audience.

Just put up a cardboard cutout of Romney and Santorum.

It’s not like they are going to ask any questions THAT NATTER, anyway...
