Are You Preparing for Nothing?
Prepping 101 ^ | 2/21/12

What happens if we do all these preparations and nothing goes wrong?

I am made fun of sometimes for being prepared. Mostly people will say “Are you one of those survival types?” NO. Number one I don’t like the word survivalist, I like being prepared. There are no tin foil hatters involved with preparedness. It sounds more prudent. If nothing goes wrong then I am ahead is how I see it.

When you prepare you are ready for what may eventually happen. Why do you carry a spare tire in your car? Because the zombies might eat one and then you will have another? NO. You carry a spare tire because things happen. We can’t control everything, but we can prepare for eventuality. You see being prepared is not something new.

One cannot prepare for every contingency. I do not have the money to buy expensive generators, solar panels etc. So, as a lone woman I decided to stockpile SKILLS.

It is all well and good that you have food stored but if you don’t know how to build a weather-proof fire or how to purify water what good is a years worth of dehydrated lasagne going to be?

I spoke to several men in my local TEA Party group and was amazed at how few knew how to cook over an open fire. They all said, “well I will just cook on my propane grill.” Really? How long will that last?

Basically I am learning skills that would help me survive in almost caveman conditions - so in anything less than total catastrophe I will be OK.

Trapping and skinning animals, how to make lye and render animal fat to make soap, shelter building, self-defense methods and how to grow and preserve food just to name a few. If I never need these skills at least it was fun learning them.

If you have skills then you will not succumb to fear if a crisis occurs.

Well said. If you wait until the disaster happens, then you can forget it. There will be no water and food, so one would have to fight his fellow citizens to survive...If the disaster does not come, then you have enough food for the rest of your life.

An awful lot of ‘I’s’ in your statement.

So you will single handedly rebuild a prospering society? Rebuild a governmental system of freedom for the people? What about your fellow countrymen?

Oh, it wasn’t about that for you, it was about ‘I’...eh?

It is always prudent to be prepared.

I can see food price hyperinflation in our immediate future (months).

Stock up on non-perishable food now, while you can. And not just a little bit. Set aside a year’s worth of food for each person who will live under your roof.

Food has intrinsic value. You can eat it or you can trade it or you can give it away.

The worst that will happen is that you will have food to eat while the unprepared are looting the grocery store.

4 hurricane s in about 6 weeks taught me. I lived in the epicenter of 2004 Charley and Jean. Caught Frances too.
Then came Katrina and Haiti and Japan.
I WILL NOT be a victim to “an event”. I will Not wait for the “one” to swoop down and help me. Heck I am a southern white Catholic pro lifer, God fearing pro second ammendment conservative. How long do you think help would come for me?

Sometimes finances were a little tight when I was finishing up grad school. Those preps I had really came in handy!

Last week, Mark Steyn cited an obscure clause in a 500 page appendix to a study done by the CBO. In short, our economy blows up in fifteen years.

Yesterday, Zero Hedge reported that another one percent was added to the GDP/DEBT ratio. In 21 days our national debt went from 100% to 101% of GDP.

well, proverbs has something to say about fools, and it doesn’t point negatively to being prepared, actually it speaks in favour of it.

Calling people being prepared fools is a bit extreme, if you don’t agree say so, but fools? History is rife of examples of people neglecting to prepare.

I don't think those folks understand prepping.

Rotate out supplies. Use them for camping and other fun things. These aren't just prepping materials, these are tools for FUN.

We have completely rotated our non-freeze-dried preps about 2-3 times since 2008. We are self-employed and our cash flow and total income have been volatile for over 3 years.

We have experienced life without the grid and it is much better to be able to generate a little electricity than to have none at all. Twice we would have lost everything if we couldn’t have run pumps during a heavy rainy period that resulted in ground water rises. We aren’t in a flood plain, but we had a flood and a septic tank back up that the plumber said was *impossible*. It was the result of series of improbable incidents all happening at once, but it happened and it was miserable.

No, because there are no guarantees. Anyone who thinks that things are going to be continuing on as they are now or get better, are fools.

“no loss” - exactly.

All your preps should be in the form of

“it’s gonna make my life better, if times get tough, or even if they don’t”. (ref: Jack Spirko, The Survival Podcast)

That’s why a garden is superior to stored food (though you need SOME of the latter).
If you’re preparing for loss of grid, make sure that your preps help you out now and in the future with lower bills.

Lots. Of. Bibles.
Seriously...

Seriesly: One day you will have to register your house as having hi-capacity bible magazine, and later be limited to ten bibles, and one bible a month purchases, and then you will be put on a "watch list" by big sis.

I like your attitude. Being a single woman, I know I don’t have enough ‘stuff’ to survive but skills will make the difference.

Thanks!!

I prep for the same reasons I own fire alarms, fire extinguishers, car insurance, etc... Not because I HOPE my car will crash, house burn down, the S truly HTF...

But because it may be the only way to survive if any of those things DO happen.

If nothing happens we rotate the stock out and down to lower levels or donate a lot to food banks or other charities.

Someone will benefit whether 'something' happens or not.
