The latest advisory to our soldiers and contractors fighting jihad in Afghanistan and Iraq will turn your stomach.

...Please see attached training module, this training is mandatory and must be completed by all onsite personnel by 10 March 2012. For any personnel scheduled to leave before this training is due, the training must be done and reported to Operations prior to travel. All departments will be required to scan all sign in sheets to Operations for accountability purposes; the departments will be required to keep these documents on hand for any record keeping purposes.

Because Muslims believe the Quran is the literal word of God, they treat all copies of book with extreme veneration. Every complete copy, or even partial passages, are considered holy. This includes verses that have been hand-written and that include the name of God. It is considered culturally insensitive for any non-Muslim to touch a copy of the Quran. Even Muslims are supposed to perform ablution (a ritualistic hand washing) before holding the Quran.

Quran verses need not be in a book or even on paper to be sacred to Muslims. You will likely not be able to read the highly decorative script in Arabic. Use your interpreter to identify Qurans or Quranic verses.

Verbal disrespect for Islam and/or the Quran is considered as inappropriate as physical desecration of the Quran. Insulting the Quran is an act of blasphemy.

Expect to encounter a copy of the Quran of other Islamic Religious Materials when you search a person’s belongings or home. Ask the person or homeowner to remove the sacred text or place it in a secure location before conducting a search.

Non-Muslims should NEVER handle an Arabic version of the Quran.

While non-Muslims are permitted to handle a translation of the Quran, one should make it a general practice to treat all religious materials with extraordinary respect. If in the performance of your duty, you are required to handle a Quran or other Islamic Religious Material, you should use a clean cloth or clean gloves.

It is important to recognize that even partial copies or hand-written verses of the Quran are equally sacred and must be handled in the same manner...

Realizing that UCMJ places certain limits upon military personnel that are very different than the rights accorded to civilians, I would still like to hear some Constitutional experts opinions on how this type of mandatory and enforced deferential and reverential treatment for one specific religion's (and i use that term very loosely!) “sacred texts” would meet the provisions for separation of church and state or any other possible legal conflicts.

Many religions believe that their texts are sacred and the literal word of God; its just that Muslims are the most violent and intolerant towards others in asserting their beliefs. Is violent intent now the new standard for according preferential legal recognition and deference toward a religions sect???!!! (Wow! I guess Janet Reno and the Branch Davidians didn't get that memo!)

I approve of the proper Islamic procedure:

Allamah ibn Abidin, a great Hanafi Scholar states, “If a copy of the Qur’an becomes old and it is difficult to read it, it should NOT be burnt in fire.” This is also the view of Imam Mohammed (Student of Imam Abu Hanifah). It is best to bury them after wrapping them into something pure and clean. The conclusion is, there are two methods of disposing an unusable Qur’an and Islamic literature: (1) Wrapping them in a piece of cloth or something pure and burying them respectfully in a place where people normally do not walk upon. (2) Fastening the items to something heavy such as a stone and placing it respectfully in flowing river. If the above-mentioned two methods are not possible to implement, only then will it be permitted to burn the Holy Scriptures and then bury the resulting ash or drop the ash in a flowing river.

Fortunately, the military normally has a convenient hole in the ground that no one walks upon.

Special guidelines have been handed down this Thursday to all United Nations personnel prosecuting the war against Nazi Germany on land, on the sea and in the air, with respect to the correct handling of the German book "Mein Kampf", written by Chancellor Adolf Hitler, if found upon enemy personnel or in enemy captured locations. The strict details showing the great respect, care and civil manners which should be shown by Armed Forces personnel are detailed in the European Stars and Stripes and films showing the proper respectful handling of the book will be shown to troops throughout Europe. These procedures, approved by Secretary of War Henry Stimson, aides Robert Patterson, Robert Lovett and John J. McCloy, as well as the Combined Chiefs of Staff, are being established to avoid offending, upsetting, or anguishing enemy Nazi combatants, and particularly elite units of the SS, who might otherwise be witness to inappropriate or purposely disrespectful mishandling of the German leader's book by Allied troops. Punishment for violating rules regarding the handling of "Mein Kampf" shall range from confinement to quarters all the way to general court-martial and dishonorable discharge from the military. Further, our of sensitivity and respect to the German people and the National Socialist party, service members from Jewish heritage shall be expressly forbidden from personally handling and confiscating copies of the book. All found books shall be carefully cleaned and restored and transmitted to neutral International Red Cross representatives in Geneva, Switzerland for later transmittal to Axis troop representatives.

We just saw Act of Valor this weekend and, please correct me if I am wrong...during the last scenes, Navy Seal narrator is reading a letter to his baby, and he says something very similar; (paraphrased) ‘don’t disrespect another’s religion’.

Could this be from the training manual?

It struck me as out of context at the time, but I was more in tune with the emotions of the scene. (OK I was crying!)

Correct me if someone has a better memory than I.

I don’t want to disparage the movie at all-it was excellent.
