The Justice Department on Thursday issued a 60-day stay of execution for hundreds of thousands of public pools which had been required to install ramps and wheelchair lifts by today or else face lawsuits over violating disability laws.

What good is a ramp in a pool? You can’t take the wheelchair into the pool...

I remember seeing a photo of handicapped parking spaces outside a skating rink. The lunacy continues.

A 2 month delay. Big whoop.

Obama is basically forcing cities and towns to shut down public pools.

"DOJ have been forced to admit they made a big overreach and are now retreating with a two-month delay on this unnecessary regulation,"

No, they were just publicly embarrassed by being laughed at. They are putting it on hold until people forget about it.

Remember that the DOJ lawyers under Obama are the same ones who will make millions of dollars suing owners of pools who don't have the equipment once they reenter private practice, and they aren't about ready to give up on this potential gravy train.

The Founding Fathers never intended for the government to be playing this kind of bull**** with the American people.

Tough luck. I mean, really, is that all so hard to say? Sometimes it has to be said - we’ve spent almost a trillion dollars in this country to comply with one of the shining examples of federal overreach - ADA - from billions sent to schools to rework every jungle gym to ensure a mythical person who will likely never be at that school can get to and use the facilities while in a wheeled device.

We’ve spent hundreds of millions at schools to cut down the number of toilets and urinals so that most all of them have the ability to be used by someone in a walker, a pretty uncommon occurrence at most elementary schools. Billions on making sure that every bus, including ones which only go along dirt roads, have the ability to accept a passenger in a wheel chair. We’ve spent even more billions to chop up perfectly good sidewalks to put in ramps, even if three feet in either direction ends in a 4 foot drop off.

We’ve got those stupid annoying dot mats surrounding virtually every business to keep a blind person from blundering into traffic, even if it rips the joints on the elderly in walkers - because, hey, disability vs disability, the winner goes to the percentage of disability.

Really, suck it up, understand that people do things to make it convenient for the majority of people, and your special needs doesn’t make you special. Suck it up and ask for some aid up those stairs, carry a dang stick to push the top button in the elevator.

Above all, kill this damn law. Or at the very least, geld it, and remove the courts from having the open power to seize wealth without restriction. Make the maximum payout be $250 IF the fix is $250 or less. And that includes lawyer fees.

When I lived in Charlotte, NC I frequented a bar (I no longer drink) where the owners wanted to manage its patronage. They did so by assuming the status of a private club and granted membership to whom they chose. A new member had to fill out a short form and pay half a sawbuck.

Much of the ADA is utter nonsense and has been for years.

Swimming is the only activity where my disabled grandson can be free of his limitations. I’d rather have the pools open and make the special effort to get him into the pool than have the pools closed for all.

Before I get flamed.....I do not think that it is the duty
of government to provide pool access to handicapped. I am a
scuba diver and have read about special accommodations for
handicapped to certify them to dive. Most activities that
are adaptable to handicapped still have them sitting in a
chair of some sort. Diving puts them in a weightless
environment that lets them get out of that chair. From what
I have heard it is a wonderful experience for them.

“Really, suck it up”

I was sitting in the doctors parking lot last week and a gal got out of the driver’s side of a car parked by me, grabbed some crutches out of her back seat and then went around, on her crutches, to the passenger side.

There she helped a younger woman with another pair of crutches, grabbed the other woman’s purse - helped her out of the car, etc.

The passenger had a cast on her ankle. The driver only had one leg! I got a kick out this obvious pro at getting around (and driving) helping out the younger gal with the bad ankle.

These pools exist at rehab facilities and hospitals. If a public pool does have them, they will also need trained people to operate them, and physical therapists to work with those in wheel chairs to make sure they are safe. In short probably 100K per year, per pool in expense, and since these are public pools guess who will pay the bill?

As much as I sympathize with the handicapped, what if after that the paralyzed person CAN'T SWIM? Must we have lifeguards at every hotel hot tub?

I thought the ADA meant "reasonable" accomodations. If Stephen Hawkins wants to go for a dip, is it "reasonable" to make sure his keyboard doesn't electrocute everyone in the pool? Let alone himself? Does the ADA "require" that he have a personal swim attendant?

Hotel pools are NOT public. They are private property and there is no “public” access. One must be a paying customer of the facility to access the pool.

what part of private property do these people NOT understand?
