There are a few differences. I think the Patriot Act was a knee-jerk reaction to a successful assault on US soil and while it was overreaching and plain, old unconstitutional, at least there was a reason.
It is now over ten years later and, though there is always a threat nowadays, there is no imminent threat. Why now? Is it the gradual progression of the planned takeover or maybe a safety net in case it becomes obvious that they will lose control in the election?

I am continuously reminded here on FR that the Muslim threat is ever-present. They will never stop in their hopes of creating a worldwide Caliphate under Sharia Law. A world where all Christians will be reduced to dhimmi-tude.
So obviously it's a good thing that Obama renewed this EO ... isn't it?
