Ann Coulter Tweets: Please ‘Explain What Was Allegedly Offensive About DeNiro’s Joke’
Mediaite ^ | March 20, 2012 | Laura Donovan

It’s not unusual for conservative commentator Ann Coulter to tell women to stop playing the victim (and in some cases, rightfully so), but it was somewhat surprising to see the New York Times bestselling author defend “The Godfather II” star Robert DeNiro’s joke that the United States is not ready for another white first lady.

“Can we please stop the fake ‘offended’ routine? Pls explain what was allegedly offensive about DeNiro’s joke,” Coulter tweeted Tuesday in the wake of Internet outrage over DeNiro’s wisecrack.

Coulter followed up with a retweet that provides us with a little more clarity: “It’s always a bad idea to imitate liberals. RT @TPCarney It’s just conservatives trying to get offended [like] liberals always get.”

DeNiro came under fire Tuesday when news outlets revealed that he’d said at a recent New York fundraising event that it’s “too soon” for the U.S. to have another white FLOTUS:

“Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?”

Though the Romney, Santorum, and Gingrich campaign did not respond to my request for comment, Gingrich unloaded his beef with DeNiro’s statement later on in the day:

“What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong, it divides the country.”

Michelle Obama wasn’t too pleased with DeNiro’s comment either, as her press secretary’s response was, “We believe the joke was inappropriate.”

So the real question is, whose side are you on: Team Potential First Ladies or Team DeNiro?

I agree with Ann.. It was a joke. A kind of a funny one as well.

I’m not a fan of the “offended” category. In fact, one of the very few things I disagreed with Sarah Palin about in the last two years was her attack on the use of the word “retarded”.

I think we should figure out what people actually MEAN by what they say, and be offended by that, not by mere words.

Anyway, Michelle Obama was offended. I think that should make conservatives think twice about whether we should be offended.

No, we won’t get over “pretending to be offended” until the Left does.
Use their own weapons against them.

I’ve never cared what DeNiro says, and now I don’t care what Ann Coulter says, either.

Why is De Niro interjecting race as an issue in this campaign? That is the question we should be (publicly) asking.

But I see Ann's point - if you want to find reasons to be perpetually offended, become a Democrat. They have much more practice at it!

I couldn’t care less about Deniro’s comments, but I love it when lefties get hoisted on their own petard, with the same language they use against conservatives.

I guess that makes me a partisan

I don’t think it was offensive. But I did see it as useful to try and make it offensive, so Liberals could draw away the attention from the contraceptive issue.

His premise was, he named 3 wives of political candidates, then immaturely implied- with no evidence, just soft slander- that not only are they unfit to be first ladies, but their entire race is unfit for it.

I think you have to have an agenda, or be dumb as a rock to not see this. Coulter can go to hell.

DiNero made a funny - an insightful and ambiguous funny. If Mrs. Great Leader wants to be all butt-hurt about it, that's her freaking problem. She's the one who needs to pull her boob belt out of the wringer, not DiNero.

I think America is absolutely ready for a white first lady - implication being Mr. & Mrs. Great Leader have worn out their welcome. This offense is proof of how far we've drifted. Perhaphs there needs to be an oversight council funded at the federal level whose job it is to pre-screen all verbalizations? In a way this might be a good thing. When the White House scares Hollywood we might see a lessening of the worship towards all things Obama coming from Hollywood.

Picture Jeff Foxworthy, in 2008, campaigning for John McCain and saying: "Is America ready for a black man in the White House? I don't think so!"

1) Foxworthy would never make such a "joke".
2) McCain (weak, spineless McCain) would have immediately disavowed the statement.
3) The media would have imploded with outrage.

DeNiro? "Is America ready for a white first lady?"
[shrug] He's just making a joke, right?

When we accept the double standard, we tell the world that we have no intention of fighting for what we believe in.

What is offensive is that it only matters who says it, if a liberal says it, then all is ok, if conservative says it, there is hell to pay, the conservative will be totally assaulted and marginalized (as per Alinsky rules).

I have a better question for Ann. How does embarrassing a gay dude add up to potentially 10 years in prison? Or just ask that Indian kid in New Jersey.

Whether or not it was a joke, whether or not it was funny, it was an attempt to marginalize whites. Wake up.

Replace “white” with “black” and ask again. I find it offensive in either case. The joke was meant to be offensive, otherwise it wouldn’t have been said.

What’s left of Ann to tell any ‘conservative’ how to think? It’s like...taking advice from Bill Maher on how to behave.
