Two fellow Alaskan women, Kirsten Powers and Penny Lee, penned a letter to the New York Times calling out misogynist attacks on women in public life.
They included this interesting aside: Coincidentally we both hail from Alaska where women are treated as equals so perhaps our threshold for this kind of behavior is less than here in the Lower 48.
As an Alaskan woman, I completely agree. Women up here do not tolerate the sexist stereotyping and behavior.
Up here, Im constantly around commercial fishermen who curse like sailors, oil field workers with hardcore blue collar work ethics, tattooed-up soldiers serving on our military bases, long-haul truck drivers, motorheads, hunters and sport fishermen; and yet I dont know anyone who talks about women the way these misogynists on TV do with their degrading comments, which includes comments mocking those with special needs.
I grew up hunting, fishing, playing sports, plowing snow, and chopping wood just like the guys. My parents raised my sisters and me to never consider gender an unequal element in anything. (In fact, today is my Dads birthday, and I want to give him a shout out because as a science teacher and track coach, he treated all of his students and athletes equally with respect and encouragement.) My daughters have participated on football, hockey, and wrestling teams just like the guys. We even dress like the guys at times (or they, like us) in warm camo hoodies and Carharts. Its accepted up here because the environment is rugged and real, and our Alaskan elements are a great equalizer.
Women and men are equals in every way in the Last Frontier, and real men are not threatened by strong women. Real men dont insult women with gross sexist comments meant to demean and objectify them.
These misogynists wouldnt know how real men behave. I cannot imagine them working on my commercial fishing skiff in Bristol Bay, or driving our trucks to haul gear out to a remote cabin, or fueling up the float plane, or even having a tinge of grease under their fingernails which symbolizes the hard work needed to fuel the nations economy. And yet these are all things average Alaskan women do everyday. If these misogynists said one of their disgusting comments up here in person to an Alaskan chick, they would have to replace their veneered teeth.
I personally do not seek an apology from these narrow-minded men. With a full family and productive to-do list everyday, I just dont have time for them. But I do feel sorry for them and for their obvious need to compensate for something thats missing in their own lives, which compels them to belittle others in order to feel big. And I feel sorry for our culture for having to listen to them. America deserves better. I applaud Kirsten and Penny for taking a stand when too many feminists dont speak up when the attacks are directed at their conservative sisters. And unfortunately too many men, like our president, will only defend certain women, not all women.

God I love this woman.
Ping!
Sarah! Would that you were prez! Sigh!
Try to picture those sissy-boys trying to change a flat tire on their Volvo, let alone pulling a fully laden 20-foot trailer up a steep gravel-grade in a pick-up. Right...
As disheartening as it was, when Palin declined to run.
I believe she may have based that decision on the (correct) conclusion she would not win, having to face the combined sleaze of both the GOP establishment, and the left.
Even Palin would have been unable to win. She would have suffered the same treatment as Herman Cain, and Rick Perry, and Newt and Rick Santorum and every single person who has ever stood in Mitt Romney’s way.
Thing is now, Romney may have damaged his own position as well.
If Romney can be prevented from winning what he has destroyed to many to attain, it’s anyone’s to win.
I sincerely hope Governor Palin will keep her eyes on that possibility, and stand ready to pounce should the opportunity present itself.
Nothing could be better.
Thank you for thinking of pinging me to this, Scania Boy. Xoxo
Right on, Sarah ... best description I've ever heard of the metrosexuals' ... umm ... shortcomings. LOL
‘too many men, like our president, will only defend certain women, not all women’.
That needs to be put in a commercial and ran every day until the election...
Its true Alaskan women are fiercely independent and tough generally..
not as mushy as lower 48 women.. generally..
even most democrat women are tougher but we keep them mostly all in Anchorage...
You know.... where we can keep an eye on them..
New tagline alert!
Hiya Scania Boy! Thanks very much for your ping!
I’ll ping her list right away!
Wow. Outstanding!!!
Compare her integrity and character to that of our pResident. The difference is stunning.
I second that Cringing!
Sarah ‘12.
I got a tingle up my leg reading this.
And Chris Matthews has the nerve to call her “profoundly stupid”.
Better use some more KrazyGlue on those veneers, Chris.
In my dreams.. (That's so y'all can say in your dreams! and I can say yup, that's what I said...
The first ballot is held. No one gains the requisite votes for nomination.
Our Lady of Wasilla gives a speech that wows the crowd. About half-way through, chants of run, sarah, run are heard under the applause.
About three-quarters of the way through, no applause is heard, because every pause is filled with RUN, SARAH, RUN!
She doesn't get to finish the speech the text is later published in her Presidential Memoirs because she can't get a word in with all the RUN, SARAH, RUN!
She steps away from the podium, and the MC gavels the place into some sort of order at least to the point when the PA can be heard over the crowd. This takes 38 minutes. Two major networks cut away...
..and miss the part where the MC places the name of Sarah Heath Palin into nomination; the chairman of the Alaska delegation seconds, and the nomination is made by acclamation.
In my dreams... but I'll be waiting.
