Vatican: "Mafia Is Anti-human And Anti-religious"

The Vatican has announced a harder line against the Mafia whose sociopathic members often wrongly assume their nominal Catholicism will save them from eternal damnation.

This week during a 2-day conference in Palermo, Sicily -- the belly of the beast for Cosa Nostra -- church officials met with Italian authorities and Mafia experts in order to coordinate a stronger role for the Vatican in taking on organized crime as reported byAlessandro Speciale for Religion News Service:

Bishop Antonino Raspanti admitted that the church "has not condemned strongly enough" the mafia in the past. But "things have changed," he said, and there is no doubt that the "Mafia is anti-human and anti-religious."

Last October Pope Benedict XVI squarely denounced the "inhuman" Mafia which infests southern Italy as reported by The Associated Press. Benedict issued the condemnation during a Sunday mass in the Calabrian region which is home to the 'Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia.

That was not the first time that Pope Benedict XVI took on the mobsters.

In October 2010 Benedict paid tribute to Rev. Pino Puglisi who was slain by Cosa Nostra or the Sicilian Mafia in 1993, and encouraged the faithful "not to resign themselves to deep-rooted evil on an island where organized crime has held sway for centuries" as then reported by Frances D'Emilio for The Associated Press.

And in 2007 the pontiff had some choice words for the Camorra or Neapolitan Mafia as then reported by Richard Owen for The Times: "It's not only a matter of the deplorable number of crimes of the Camorra, but also the fact that violence tends unfortunately to become a widespread mentality, insinuating itself into the fabric of society."

To confront the Mafia is to stare down the devil itself.
