Not the first time! Wern’t the WRANGEL ISLANDS once US territory? Did not the Soviets invade, killing several Americans and FDR eventually give up the islands to them?

No, Wrangel Island, which is off the coast of Siberia was never US territory and was never occupied by the US. Unfortunately, it is often confused with Wrangell Island, which is in the Alaskan panhandle.

I’m not sure about all the background, but these islands had a Soviet AFB and early warning radars for decades.
