Radiation Hitting the Streets of LA

Excerpt:

* * * Radiation is pouring out of Fukushima and that radiation is hitting the streets of Los Angles quite hard. In April 2012 environmental journalist and LA Weekly contributor Michael Collins, an independent who has tested over 1500 samples since the Fukushima earthquake of 2011, was shocked to find that radiation levels in the falling rain over L.A. measured five times above normal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XXe8K1fRqI&feature=player_embedded#t=0s * * *“The California Highway Patrol considers anything over three times background, 300% of background above, a trigger level to a hazardous materials situation,” reported the EnviroReporter.

* * * Since the last testing period, the radiation detected has risen another 130% indicating a continued upward trend. * * *

If we translate what the New York Times is saying in terms of radiation released in the first 20 days, 900,000 terabecquerels translates into 27 million curies. It is over a year later and no one knows or is saying how much aggregate radiation has been released but we can imagine it’s a staggering amount.

One curie is the amount of radiation equal to the disintegration of 37 billion atoms—37 billion becquerels—per second. It is a very large amount of radiation. We multiply these amounts (27 million curies times 37 billion radioactive atoms) and we are back to just a little more than our 900,000 terabecquerels… all the way up to 999,000,000,000,000,000 becquerels, which translates into 999,000,000,000,000,000 nuclear particles decaying in the first 20 days of the Fukushima nuclear nightmare. * *

I hesitate to say what I actually think about Fukushima except why in the world has Tepco remained in charge of the freaking situation ___ ?

But then I will only say while biting my tongue that it appears to me that the Japanese government is almost as corrupt as our own.

Oooooooo, big scary numbers!

So how does this compare to the doses from the Santa Susana meltdown?...

Okay but he never compares the Belarus numbers with Fukishima in any form anyone can understand.

What’s the real comparison?

Your linked report will be trashed by the pro nuke people here. So good luck with that. The dirty little secret however, is that the major governments of the world have decided to downplay the Fukushima hazards, simply because it would absolutely crash the world economy, if the truth be told. This has been discovered by FOIA requests. So don't expect the government to acknowledge any of these hazards. At least until the world economy does crash and they need additional justifications to implement marshal law and draconian totalitarian restrictions on movement. IMHO.

Between corrupt government(s), TEPCO in full on CYA mode, and the anti-nuclear crowd, how in the hell is one to determine who to believe about any of this? Just wall-to-wall propaganda.

I agree with this. Yes, it’s REALLY bad but I’ve never seen hard numbers and direct measurement comparisons between Fukishima and Chernobyl. I’ve seen lots of fearmongering. Who’s to be believed?

This report does a pretty good job comparing the two. Watch the upper video to see the actual measured results. There is also a good map showing Belarus, Russia and Ukraine contamination distribution.

My money is on the Fukushima disaster being much more deadly than is being reported. TEPCO cleaning this up would be like having a regional power supplier in charge of cleaning up a nuclear meltdown in the US. Here in Illinois it would be like CILCO ‘maintaining’ a melted down nuclear power plant in Clinton (if you’re familiar). The results will be known, but not that soon. Several national governments are complicit in this, including the Japanese and ours. The Russians had the sense to cap Chernobyl with tons of concrete. The Japanese are using tarps and hoping nothing bad happens to topple reactor #4. It’s not a good situation.

Do you people eat any tuna caught in the Pacific Ocean ___? Do you actually think any canned tuna is safe __ ? Good luck with that too . . .

Another excerpt from above:

“The greatest human experiment with radiation exposure is taking place in the Ukraine and Byelorussia, where much of the 50 million curies the Soviet government says were released by the 1986 accident at Chernobyl is being felt… Chernobyl legacy could include hundreds of thousands of additional cancer deaths… Current estimates predict anything from 14,000 to 475,500 deaths worldwide from Chernobyl.” (A curie measures the intensity of radiation and is equal to 37 billion disintegrations per second. As a reference point, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs released an estimated one million curies.)

TEPCO has reported on what happens when it opens doors in Fukushima. An estimated 1.6 billion becquerels of radioactive materials were released, compared with 500 million becquerels when the double doors of the building of reactor No. 1 were opened one day in May.

So let’s go back to Belarus where the average level of contamination on the polluted territories was 37Ci/km2 and the maximum safe limit for residency is 5Ci/km2. We had 27 million curies released in the first 20 days and that would contaminate an area of approximately five million square kilometers if distributed equally. Of course that never happens as we can see in the fallout patterns surrounding Chernobyl. It can be assumed that the worst of the radiation was released in the first month with the complete meltdown of multiple reactor cores and the destruction and probably vaporization of spent-fuel rods.

Radioactive News

Health authorities continue to insist that there are no health risks involved, but The Huffington Post tells us that bluefin tuna caught in California last August showed radiation levels that were ten times the norm, according to a new paper from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. Scientists believe that the radiation—in the form of the isotopes caesium-137 and caesium-134—came from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear disaster that began in March of 2011.

In addition, radioactive debris is already being found on West Coast shores as far as Washington State and is expected to continue to be washed up in the next three years.

I'm trying to think of a list of successful government conspiracies, but I'm really coming up short... So I'll ask the most logical question: How much nuclear material was lost? Less than 1/30th of the size of the smallest above ground nuclear test during the 1950’s? Less than 1/100th of the mass of one of the Pacific atol explosions? And how much exposed radioactive dust was kicked up by the Japanese spill, say, compared to the India nuclear tests, or Chinese, or Russian? Or even Pakistani?

Yep, it would absolutely crush the entire world economy if the truth was known. It's the ultimate world government conspiracy...

The most successful government conspiracy was the Global Warming conspiracy. Took a heck of a lot of effort from many people to begin to uncover that conspiracy. And of course some help from Russian hackers was required when they released emails from the main conspirators. And yet they are still millions that believe that humans caused Global Warming (AGW). Prior to AGW, the previous most successful conspiracy run by the government was the Ozone Hole Scare. Completely bogus. The suns UV output controlled the ozone density. We know that now, but that conspiracy was successful for the government).

The problem with determining the amount of radiation released by Fukushima and comparing it to Chernobyl is that most of the radiation from Fukushima is bound up in liquid. The oceans and the storage tanks for cooling water. We have no idea what those levels have been in total. Also, the release is still occurring and will continue to occur for many years. Three complete meltdowns occurred at Fukushima, and the media seems obsessed with one of the reactors that did not meltdown (#4).

Still waiting for a weight of nuclear material lost from containment... The most ‘horrific’ descriptions I can find online cite a ‘secret, hidden’ government report that states that 50 grams were lost from containment. Let us compare that to the smallest above ground nuclear explosion in Nevada in the 1950’s. That was 30,000 grams. Six hundred times as big, and probably 2,000,000 grams of radioactive dust spread across the United States.

Let’s take a very very ‘worst case’ scenario and say that 1,000 grams were released. That is still 1/200th of the nuclear material released from Chernobyl during the fire.

I’m more than willing to live a year within 3 miles of the Fukushima plant, growing and eating all my food from the ground there.

But hey, let’s take it to the ultimate worst case scenario, that every milligram of nuclear material stored at Fukushima went critical and was lost from containment, and compare it to Chernobyl... You’re still talking about 1/25th of the disaster.

As for your points about the global warming...err, climate change scam - it’s been running in academia for the better part of a century, alternating between threats of the next ice age from soot production from coal to global warming from release of carbon dioxide. That’s not a government conspiracy, that’s a scam and swindle.

Not a M.D.

Dr. Mark Sircus, one of the most prolific writers in medicine, holds the honorary title of doctor of Oriental medicine and was one of the first nationally certified acupuncturists in the United States. He was trained in acupuncture and oriental medicine at the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Santa Fe, N.M., and in the School of Traditional Medicine of New England in Boston. He served at the Central Public Hospital of Pochutla, in Mexico.

That's a real winner you've got there.

Look at it this way, between 1951 and 1962, 100 above ground nuclear tests were conducted in Nevada, and we survived..
