You've both made terrific points. One of my favorite TV shows is "How It's Made." Not only do you get to see how "they" make many products we take for granted, the machinery used to produce these products is really fascinating to watch, and you realize that "someone" had to figure out how to design and build those machines used in the fabrication of those products. And taking it even a step further (which they sometimes do in the show) looking at how the raw materials are produced for using in the production of those products.

Great!

The aviation version is here and quite funny, at least to pilots and aviation mechanics:

http://www.rst-engr.com/rst/articles/tsodpencil.pdf

Note:”TSO” in the article means “Technical Standard Orders”

“A TSO is a written specification published by the Federal Aviation Administration as a minimum performance standard for specified materials, parts, and appliances used on civil aircraft. It may specify input and output parameters, operating parameters, and other minimum specifications that apply to an article.

The FAA publishes TSOs to set uniform, minimum standards for articles installed an used in aircraft. When authorized to manufacture a material, part, or appliances to a TSO standard, this is referred to as TSO authorization.”
