What does the Supreme Court's health-care ruling mean for me?
The Washington Post ^ | June 28, 2012

Posted on 07/01/2012 8:05:39 AM PDT by jcsjcm

The court's decision to uphold all but one component of the health-care law means new rules for insurers that have already taken effect will remain in place. Beginning in 2014, virtually all Americans will have to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty. There also will be new opportunities to get coverage, including state-based marketplaces known as exchanges* (through which individuals will be able to purchase private plans that meet strict benchmarks for quality) and federal subsidies to help low-income people buy plans on the exchanges.

I checked to see how much a single mother making 30,000 with 2 children would have to pay that did not have insurance.

Right now:If you have been unable to obtain health insurance as a result of a pre-existing medical condition, you may be able to buy it through one of the “high risk pools” the law has set up in each state through the end of 2013. But the premiums in the pools vary and can be high.

Starting in 2014:You will have the option of buying a health plan through your state's exchange with federal assistance. Based on your income, your annual premiums for that plan would be no more than $1,200 to $1,890. Your maximum out-of-pocket costs for deductibles and co-payments would be capped at 15 percent of the total cost.

Insurers can’t discriminate against you for having a pre-existing condition, and can only vary rates within a narrow range.

If you do not obtain insurance coverage by 2014 you will be assessed a tax penalty. The penalty becomes progressively greater from 2014 through 2016, when it reaches full strength. At that point, assuming your current income remains the same and your household consists of 1 uninsured adult and 2 uninsured children, your family would be subject to a penalty of about $1,390. You are exempt from the penalty if the least expensive plan option in your area exceeds eight percent of your income.

PENALY $1,390 - Face the nation this morning was stating Obama's penalty will only be $650 dollars opposed to Romneycare which is $1200 in Massachusetts. So, I ask who is lying to the general public?

I checked out how much this will cost my family - $9,558 a year! ouch....

Your coverage:

Starting in 2014:You will have the option of buying a health plan through your state’s exchange with federal assistance. Based on your income, your annual premiums for that plan would be no more than $9,558. Your maximum out-of-pocket costs for deductibles and co-payments would be capped at 30 percent of the total cost.

If you do not obtain insurance coverage by 2014 you will be assessed a tax penalty. The penalty becomes progressively greater from 2014 through 2016, when it reaches full strength. At that point, assuming your current income remains the same and your household consists of 2 uninsured adults and 3 uninsured children, your family would be subject to a penalty of about $2,085. You are exempt from the penalty if the least expensive plan option in your area exceeds eight percent of your income.

It means I will work 5 times as hard to defeat Obama and his socialist supporters in Congress.
I will spend 3 times as much money to support true Conservatives for the House & Senate.

Because the alternative is to spend 3 times the money for one third of the actual healthcare I will require in the future.
It means many healthcare options will not be available, not be authorized, or have such a long wait time, as to be meaningless.

OK then, since you are sold on it. Will you like the rationing that will come as a result?

Lets assume you have begun to pass blood in your urine. So you now go to a Dr and he scopes and takes a biopsy at the same time.

Under your valued Obamacare, you will go to that Dr and he will scope it, BUT, he cant take a biopsy till he gets permission from the authorities to do it. Then, after about 6 months-it’ll take that long for the authorization to come down from the fed dept, they take the biopsy and find..yup, you got bladder cancer, but it has broken through the wall of the bladder since they didnt get at it soon enough, and, now it has spread all through your system. So now, they have to wait to get permission from the authorities to perform surgery to remove your bladder. After another six months, they perform the surgery, but, the cancer has spread so far so fast you now will be denied any future treatment since there is no chance of you surviving.

THAT IS THE TYPE OF MEDICAL CARE YOU WILL GET!!!!!

You think I am Effn kidding? That is what happened to J McEwen from the UK..not a particular friend of mine but that is another story. But that is exactly what happened to him and I have a couple other tales to tell you of the fantastic medical care this type of program will provide.

It creates a two layered system. The real good Medical professionals will drop out of this system and will only take people that pay cash. That leaves the huddled masses out and the elite will get quality care while the rest of the dumb asses who swallowed this crap hook line and sinker get nothing.

I do hope that you are not thinking that I am cheerleading Obamacare!

I have never been for government take over on anything! This is not my article. I just wanted to give this calculator to my fellow Freepers so that they knew what an atrocious program this is!

I am hoping that your statement saying OK then since you are sold on it was directed towards the article and not me as the OP......

You will have the option of buying a health plan through your state's exchange with federal assistance.

With federal assistance. And where will the $$$ come from for that assistance? That's right, you and me. In the form of higher costs for our health care, fees, penalties, taxes, whatever you want to call it to try to make it legal. The bottom line is that for most of us, we will be paying more to cover the costs of covering others. There's no free lunch, and they've layered federal inefficiencies on top.

IMHO the SCOTUS made a horrendously wrong decision. They have set a precedent that is far, far worse than anything to do with health care costs. They have set the precedent that the government can force you to do anything they, the federal hacks, decide they want you to do. Coming soon to collective near you:

Sure, these measures sound ridiculous and extreme - now. But when introduced gradually over the next few years, built on the precedent of government mandated health care... Hey, they are for our own collective good - how can you be against these?

No, this is not sarcasm. I truly believe this is where our so-called "leaders" are trying to take us.

Then accept my app’ I took it the wrong way.

I hope folks will look beyond the money on this thing. They WANT you to focus on the money and forget the real travesty of this.

This is a power grab plain and simple and Ronald Reagan was absolutely right back in the 60s in his speech.

No problem, just would never want to be thought of as liking this program. I’ve been glued to the computer watching this all go down and I was nearly in tears after the court ruled!

The government pays for absolutely nothing. They tax the people to line their pockets, expand their base, and give out government money that comes from where? The government? No, from us! We really need to change the thought process of the American people when it comes to Government programs. They are not government programs, they are taxpayer programs paid by the sweat of the people.

"You are exempt from the penalty if the least expensive plan option in your area exceeds eight percent of your income."

"Go Galt" then, while you have time. "The least expensive plan option" will very soon be huge. Those medical rackets of European/Roman origin will see to it.

Going Galt is about the only option for many. Find any way possible to stay off the socialist grid, millions of course will be smart and bold enough to legally opt out, especially when you cannot be persecuted if you make any false claims of being a veteran or a Native American.

Knew a woman who had severe asthma. She and her family lived at a high altitude in the mountains, where she suffered far less than anywhere she’d lived before (allergens/pollutants). One winter, her son brought a flu home from where he did retail service. She caught and developed pneumonia afterward.

Little Italian intern resort doctor ordered her to move. He was visibly and audibly hostile, acting like a queer. Accused her of smoking (which she had never done). Said that she couldn’t live where the air is so thin. Same doctors recommend the same mountainous area for members of the political/regulator class.

So they’ll probably decide where you’ll live, too. Have fun. Enjoy the slide. All sides in politics are pushing to perpetuate it. If you want to beat it, you’ll need to start at your local level and discard all NIMBY-isms. This nation needs young men at work (men—not what passes for men these days) and well paid in drilling, mining, agriculture and manufacturing. ...young men with good wives and families. Otherwise, meet the consequences just ahead.
