What If Nothing Happens?
SHTF Plan ^ | 7/7/12 | David SafeWater

Posted on 07/07/2012 3:23:24 PM PDT by Kartographer

Now, let’s take that conversation into context for my focus of writing an article this morning: What if nothing happens? That’s exactly the question I’ll ask you. You, the prepared individual. You, the prepper who purchases food to have in the event your employment situation loses its revenue temporarily, or a minor movement of the earth closes local markets and grocers. You, the healthy student of nutrition. You, the responsible parent who works to provide the necessities of life for your children and grandchildren and works to secure those ongoing needs. You, the involved citizen who talks with your neighbors and cares about the safety of your neighborhood. You, the owner of a vehicle who pays auto insurance for security against an undesired vehicular event. You, the purchaser of health insurance for a family whose health is fundamental and essential. You, the ardent securer of water storage, just in case another 5-day boil-water-alert happens this month. You, the consumer who also produces constructively while others are socially-secure thanks to your payroll contributions. You, whose money is lent to banks whose bail-outs secured enormous pensions. You, whose income tax returns without interest.

What if not one thing happens this year to drastically- or even minimally- inconvenience your lifestyle?

In the event that your storage of food, water, medical, and other resources remains unmoved out of necessity, then count yourself fortunate. This is what we hope for, although we’d be willfully ignorant to discredit the vulnerabilities of our current environments, local and global!

If your application of primitive or pioneer skills finds use within recreational or standard homestead practices instead of emergent necessity, then continue enjoying their practice in peace. Please carry on and experience the following in your endeavors to be self-reliant:

LOL

I’ll have to remember that the next time someones calls me some goofy name.

The funny thing is I usually wonder why others aren’t more preppared.

For instance, I ran out of T-Gel the other day and I was hacked off when I realized I had gone through all my bottles.

So I bought twelve bottles and that outta last me 2 years.

Can’t believe I hadn’t noticed my stores were low on this. OTH hand I have years worth of bar soap, regular shampoos, conditioner and body wash.

So I can’t run out of those items anytime soon.

What If Nothing Happens?

Something always happens. It is the nature of things to happen. But it is usually not exactly the something we were expecting.

In the improbable event that nothing ever happens to my family it will happen to someone I know. And I will be able to help them.

I love my time at the range and I sincerely like canned corned beef.

Ever see what happens when you put a .308 through can of corned beef? Nothing but entertainment! Is canned corned beef better than SPAM? (I LOVE SPAM)

I guess it kinda depends on your definition of “nothing” - a lot has already ‘happened’ (think boiling frog), and although there’s not one event that we can point to and say “That’s IT!!”, most of us are somewhat worse off than we were a few short years ago, with prospects for the slide to continue indefinitely....

I use them interchangably. Probably the way I was brought up, with yankees and normal people in the family. Some of that is regional. ;)

I'm going to debone the chicken after saving all the good bits like feet, offal, and bones for stock.

Then I will roll and tie it around the stuffing, similar to prepping a ballontine, but instead of poaching, I'll bake until 160F internal, rest it, and serve warm.

Yep. Same here. I expect nothing to happen in this context, but I’ve got enough to keep my camping and hunting for awhile.

The thing with people wanting to point to Y2K as an example of why there’s no need to prepare is a misnomer, yes nothing happened, but not because there was no problem. Nothing happened because companies and governments spent millions of dollars and IT people spend thousand of man hours fixing the problem before it could occur.

Taking heed of a problem and preventing a disaster does not prove disaster can not happen.

If a farm stores bails of sand bags and water pumps in case of flooding and one spring the Weather Service announces a river crest that’s 6” over the levee that protects his farm, And then he and his neighbors work together and raise the levee a foot. And between the sand bags and the water pumps the farm which is below the river’s crest doesn’t flood.

Does that mean the farm was never in any danger of flooding. Was the farm and his neighbors fools for working so hard to sand bag the levee and keep the pumps running? Hell was it foolish for the farm to store the sand bags and the pumps to begin with? Was the Weather Service wrong in issuing their Flood Warning?

Pointing to a disaster averted is NO PROOF that disaster can not and do not occur.

“...at least half of my preparedness supplies double as camping, hunting, home protection and hobby gear.”

I’m in the middle of hurricane season, and if I don’t have to use my preps this year, there will be another season next year and the next year and the next year and the next year and the next year and the next year and the next year, etc............. The last time after Ike, a friend called me (my phone worked because I had an old time plug in the wall phone), and I said, “Wait, let me turn down the TV.” She said, “You have power?” I said, “No, but I still have a working TV to get news all day.” That news was very important to know what was happening around me due to no power for days.

Then there is tornado season all year long in Texas, plus power can go off for no reason and stay off for a day or more (that has happened), plus bath salt zombies can appear at any time and I will definitely shoot one with my beautiful Ruger if “it” is trying to chew on me.

Maybe some of you Freepers live where absolutely nothing ever happens, I don’t. Or maybe, I have lived so long I know better than non-preparers that s### will eventually happen to every one. I like my standard of living and I’ll keep as much of it as I can by staying prepared. And, I don’t think Hussein’s FEMA would save me – I’m probably on his enemy list (just as many of you probably are – you know, people who cling to their guns and Bible). I wonder what he clings to? Well, that’s another whole topic.

I do wish JRandomFreeper (Johnny) and Kartographer (don’t know his real name), lived close to me so I would have “back up” – you see I’m just a little ole lady who can’t do jack – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Russian toilet paper can double as sand paper during SHTF I am told.

FEMA is a good place to get free plans for fire shelters and how to run your tractor on wood chips.

I was so disappointed when nothing happened for Y2K

WTH makes you think nothing happened? There were issues, but they were minor because folks worked as many as possible.

I was doing civil defense radio comms during the roll over at a water pumping station and at 0000 all of the pumps turned on. Before we could shut them down, they had blown 6 major leaks in the town I was living in.

Media didn't cover it because the city had a plan b.

“Russian toilet paper can double as sand paper during SHTF I am told.”

I have been to many countries and the first one had such bad toilet paper, I kept a sample. Then, I collected a sample from every country I went to - including mainland China.

So, I am an expert on foreign toilet paper. Take a roll from the US with you, because that’s what I did after that first country. Also, most countries don’t use wash cloths in bath/shower. If you want a wash cloth in your bath/shower, take one with you.

Same here, except I never had a normal family. We were all a little berserk.

Jr. Try putting a small pan of water. or better yet, chicken broth underneath. It helps hold the moisture content for juicy chicken.

You can always crisp the skin under the broiler.

I have secrets for juicy chicken and pork chops. No rubber chicken comes out of this kitchen.

One gains knowledge like that from cooking for 1500 of your dearest friends for a few years. In the field. ;)

Marcella you wouldn’t want me living near you as I’ll be drawing a lot of promised bullets during SHTF. ;-)

Now Johnny man I wish he was near me I’d have a place to barter for a excellent meal and a good adult beverage to wash it down.
