One of the comments on the article site said the police accepted custody of the dog and in so doing accepted responsibility for it. I agree with that. I think they’re lying about the number of times they checked the dog. As far as giving it water, even if they did it would not prevent heatstroke, to which the dog is more vulnerable than a human being because of its inability to sweat. It’s obvious the disposition of the dog was given very low priority by the police. Also, the “good samaritan” was stupid to think leaving the dog tethered in the sun was acceptable. The slow Animal Control response didn’t help either. Incompetence and insensitivity all around.

I agree, the story doesn’t jibe. I also don’t think the dog would have died in an hour-hour and half. I think it was tied out there much longer.

It was a pit bull. Ghetto dog of choice. My sympathy is limited.

They claim the little felluh was given water every 20 minutes. I doubt that and besides, what moron leaves an animal chained in the direct sunlight, on a restaurant hot concrete slab roaster and on a day where temps are over 100 degrees.

Bozos.....

Add to that the fact that most states require animals to be given shelter and had this been called in to an animal welfare organization as cruelty it would have passed the test with flying colors. Most people (with the exception of the cops in this town, apparently) know enough not to leave an animal in conditions of extreme heat without water and adequate shelter from the relentless sun.

Good Samaritan should have called the SPCA himself. The dog had been running around prior to being tied up. No doubt he was already overheated. I pray the SPCA does the autopsy they say they will do and the police dept. is held responsible. Poor dog.

Since it was a pit it deserved to suffer and die?

Is that you Michael Prick Vick?

I’ve seen some crazed APBT’s, but also some of the calmest dogs I’ve ever been around have been pit bull terriers. There are good dogs and bad ones of all breeds, just as in humans.

Make certain the dog is offered to the White House. Obama does not approve of wasting good dog meat.

Poor dog. I wonder why the police didn’t simply call animal control to come pick the dog up. There is no suggestion in the article that the dog was aggressive. So sad, but any idiot knows you don’t tie a dog out without shelter. Sheesh.
