This was supposed to be the year the U.S. Senate finally ratified the age-old Law of the Sea Treaty. That was apparently enough motivation for conservatives to rally the grassroots and sink the treaty once again. Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) announced that he had secured commitments from 34 senators to oppose LOST, ensuring it would not be ratified by the Senate this year. Because it requires 67 votes for the Senate to approve treaties, only 34 votes are needed block them. The 34 senators include: 1.Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) 2.Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) 3.Sen. The treaty offered little upside for the United States in the view of many conservatives. Yet it would have instituted a new, international legal regime and further eroded American sovereignty. DeMint spearheaded a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to outline the opposition. It was signed by 31 of the 34 senators. Isakson announced his opposition independently and Portman and Ayotte wrote a separate letter. Here’s the full text of the DeMint letter: We understand that Chairman Kerry has renewed his efforts to pursue Senate ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. We are writing to let you know that we believe this Convention reflects political, economic, and ideological assumptions which are inconsistent with American values and sovereignty. By its current terms, the Law of the Sea Convention encompasses economic and technology interests in the deep sea, redistribution of wealth from developed to undeveloped nations, freedom of navigation in the deep sea and exclusive economic zones which may impact maritime security, and environmental regulation over virtually all sources of pollution. To effect the treaty’s broad regime of governance, we are particularly concerned that United States sovereignty could be subjugated in many areas to a supranational government that is chartered by the United Nations under the 1982 Convention. Further, we are troubled that compulsory dispute resolution could pertain to public and private activities including law enforcement, maritime security, business operations, and nonmilitary activities performed aboard military vessels. If this treaty comes to the floor, we will oppose its ratification.

There is a SUPREME difference between “commitment” and “voted,” so hold off any celebration until after all the votes are counted.
BTW, not only do politicians change their minds, but Supreme Court Judges do too.

* He’s voting “no” if it’s brought up this year but you take what you can get. Inhofe hinted today that several more “no” votes will occur if the treaty is taken for a floor vote.
I wonder if this monster will even get 60 votes for cloture.
Kerry knows that this is a “make or break” for LOST for the foreseeable future. If the GOP gains control the Senate, and has a new batch of GOP conservatives (Fischer, Cruz, Mourdock, etc.,) then this treaty might not get out of committee in 2013 (or for many, many years).
If the whip count isn’t there, I can guess that those who support this treaty might either switch their vote (after making a lame excuse) or simply not show up. If you hear the quorum call with several Democrats not on the list, then you know it’s truly DOA.
Will Kerry, like a bulldog, try to ram a floor vote? At this rate he might not get cloture and risks getting egg on his face....his followers might not be so fanatical when voters hear the scope of this bad treaty.
Until the vote, get your senators on-the-record on LOST. Even the ones who the press believes are supporters.

Even if he loses, Kerry will not quit. He and his globalist buddies will go back to the drawing board to make a few cosmetic changes and try to resell LOST as something new and improved (back home we call that “polishing a turd”).

I expect LOST and the Convention on Small Arms to be voted on in the lame duck session, just like those bastards did with the Farm bill, START, and Gays in the Military after the 2010 @ss-kicking. We need more than 34, and they have to be comitted to stopping lame duck stunts!!

I called Senator Cochran’s office last week and told them I would certainly expect him to vote against it but he should come out and openly oppose it. Now he’ll just say “I was going to vote against it” We really need to get rid of “Thad”.
