Summer Reading List Ideas for a New College Conservative (Vanity)
vanity~me | July 17, 2012 | Bushwon

Interested in some ideas for a very basic basic primer to provide some foundation for a new college conservative going on a road trip...nothing too involved--just an easy-to-read basic first book that will provide basic information on politics, culture, economy from a conservative (or limited government libertarian) viewpoint.

BTW, I would look for any recommended titles on http://www.onread.com. It is a free, online library that contains far more than just public domain works. It even has works just a few years old.

Johnny Tremain (sorry but I don’t know how to do italics) by Esther Forbes is wonderful American fiction. Although it was written as a children’s book, there are many underlying themes that appeal to an adult. I read it the first time when I was in third grade, and I have reread it several times since then. In fact I just read it this summer and I am soon to be 33. It’s a quick read but cuts to the bone the sacrifices made by our founders as well as average colonists.

I’ll add, from a fiction perspective, Free Republic’s own Travis McGee has some great novels.

The left has attempted to spin these as extreme radical novels, however, they aren’t. (Funny they are similar to Card’s Empire novels yet because these books deal with illegal immigration pretty bluntly, they claim it as racist.)

They are a cross between Vince Flynn and Act of Valor.

A nice big readable book in trade paper from isi.org is Russell Kirk’s “The Roots of American Order”. Total $14.50 cost.

This book outlines the roots of our western civilization that our republic was founded upon.

Thanks for the ideas. Basic versus applied economics...Got it :)
Will check out Kirk.

Not sure how much time college student will devote to current events, but trying to give them some perspective so that when they do see stuff on fb, twitter, and daily show (ugh, that seems to be a source of news for college students?!?!?), they will be more discerning!

It’s about 3” in diameter, and doesn’t show when she’s in uniform. She also has a Viking ship on her bicep.

This is the former Seaman Anoreth, now Petty Officer Anoreth, FReeper since 2003. The Islamic Sultanate of Brunei could be a world economic miracle if they’d taken the Thomas Sowell books she offered them, “because your economy sucks, and my mom will get me new books when I get back to the US.”

Happy to help ;-). She was the only woman (19-year-old redheaded girl) on maneuvers with the Brunei Coast Guard, and not wearing a hijab, either. After telling them that all civilized countries have women in law enforcement, she offered them her Thomas Sowell books, and then, once she’d told them more about the United States, they all wanted to move to Charlotte, NC, where the climate is moderate, rents are reasonable, and women have jobs.

It could have been an international incident.

That should give you a days read in short form. It also encapsulates the outline of decent Western philosophy.

Thanks, some great choices!

Thank you all for your great contributions.

This list is getting so good I think it should be compiled, posted, and sent to our elected officials (fed. (including exec & judicial branches), state, and local) for THEIR Summer Reading List...

Most of them seem fairly illiterate when it comes to basic economic and conservative principles!
