The number of Americans filing new unemployment claims increased by 34,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 386,000. That brings the total number of people currently claiming unemployment benefits under all programs to 5.75 million. When President Barak Obama took office in 2008, 30 million people were receiving food stamps. Approximately 46 million people receive them today; that's one out of every seven Americans.
These and other welfare programs originally designed as temporary safety nets have become a way for Obama & Company to hold millions of Americans hostage by an ever-growing federal government. In fact, many of the administration's policies have been designed to increase the ranks of dependency fostering a political version of Stockholm Syndrome.
In psychological terms, Stockholm Syndrome is a complex reaction to a frightening situation. It occurs when hostages, dependent on their captor for their very lives, develop positive feelings for a captor who has shown them some small kindness or at least refrained from violence towards them. In severe cases, the hostages will actually defend their captor against would-be rescuers seeming to forget that it was the captor's decisions and actions that placed them in mortal danger in the first place.
The current political version has President Obama ignoring the Jobs Council he himself established to encourage economic recovery and job creation. Meanwhile he continues to advocate for more tax and spend policies that only succeed in growing the size of government and the ranks of those desperately dependent on it.
In response to a reporter's question as to why the president has not met publicly with his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness in over six months, White House press secretary Jay Carney said, "There's no specific reason except that the president's obviously got a lot on his plate."

In light of his miserable record, plans for more of the same and policies that have turned so many Americans into economic hostages, why do so many support giving him another term? Just like Stockholm Syndrome, it's a complex reaction to a frightening situation but fortunately there is plenty of time for voters to snap out of it before Election Day.
