We have a kid that was super book smart at a San Diego high school. And appeared to be super book smart at a second-tier college in the University of California system.
But he wasn’t smart enough to realize that there are few entry-level jobs in neuroscience research laboratories for people with “only” a bachelor’s degree so he apparently spent a year after graduation living in his parents’ basement.
He came late to the realization that he would need a doctorate to get a decent research position in a neuroscience research laboratory so he applied for admission to a doctoral program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and was admitted.
He was admitted largely based on his book smarts while at UC Riverside. But he found himself moving up from a second-tier school to a first-tier school. He lasted a year in a three (or more) year program. While the University of Colorado has not said why the shooter withdrew from the program last month (and probably cannot comment on why he did so without his permission), I suspect he was not able to do graduate work that would qualify him to continue in a doctoral program. Either he is not as smart as we (and he) have been led to believe or he was spending too much time away from his studies doing something else.

It was late June and I was sitting in a café seven hundred miles from home, doing a little web surfing. There was plenty of room at mid-morning, so I could sit at the end of the coffee bar with my laptop. I was scanning the breaking news about the new mass-shooting. Like most people I was morbidly fascinated with the deranged young man who was the killer. That is, the trigger puller. But I was looking over his shoulder for something else: signs of a guiding hand.

Why? Because I know something about the subject.

You see, being a guiding hand is my life’s avocation. My secret avocation, that is. Outwardly I’m a tenured professor of sociology at a Mid-western university. A life-long bachelor, so my summers are my own. Ostensibly for writing, research, quiet reflection, bungee jumping or what have you. My summer hobby is traveling and meeting interesting people. Everything I do on these road trips can be explained under the rubric of field research, but even so I pay with cash and move like a ghost. I’m old school. It’s a harmless quirk. Nobody cares.

Like where? I have only been able to find one website that will sell a Level III vest with armor plates to stop rifle fire to individuals And I have looked a lot. Almost all require LEO, military or Security credentials.

My understanding is that tea gas cannisters are considered a pyrotechnic and you have to have a special license to buy it. How did you get it?
