Vanity: My Bedford Flag
Self / Bedford MA Public Library ^ | 7/21/12 | self

The way things have been going lately, I decided it was time to reach back into the nation's history and dig deep for a little inspiration. Shortly after the Roberts/Obamacare decision, I gave thought to flying the Gadsden Flag, but that just wasn't a strong enough message...the Bedford Flag was more expressive about how I feel, but where to find one? You can buy some cheap nylon ones online, but they look trashy and are probably made in China. I decided to make my own, and today, just about wrapped it up...I took photos along the way, some with my phone and some with my SLR, so the picture quality and color varies...

Fabric just purchased, and laid out to be measured...

...starting to turn into a flag...stitched the fringe and if you look close, I loosely stitched a grid of white thread to help layout the design.

initial design laid out and underpainting started...

First splash of color and some additional underpainting on the armor.

Getting the armor done...

Finally just about where I want it. This is where I'm at today...just a little more work to be done.

You already know my opinion, dear. For the record, I think you’ve done a magnificent job. The bold and stunning vision of your Bedford Flag brings the blood up and infuses the heart with courage, as we remember we must fight to take back our country from those determined to destroy it. “Conquer Or Die”, we must! I hope you’re as proud of your flag, as I am of you.

...the mundanes won’t know it’s history at all and will assume it’s medieval.

Somebody call?

I'm far from deficient in my knowledge of US history, but I'd never heard of the Bedford flag until today.

One of my best kept secrets is that I own a sewing machine. Back in my drinking days, while I was still in the Army, I bought it to sew on my own patches, name tapes, badges, tabs, etc. Each BDU top would cost me $10-15 bucks just for the sewing, so I bought a cheap $60 brother thinking that after four or five uniforms, I'd be saving beer money.

Then over the years, I started repairing stuff. Then I started making stuff...

While it’s great to know one can buy a Bedford flag— and thanks for the link —there’s very little detail on the one at the store site. IMHO, Joe 6-pack’s version is a fine representation of the original.

There is a historical flag site online that has the Pine Tree one and other historical flags. I got Christopher Columbus’s, too - with F and Y on it (Ferdinand and Isabella). The Bedford Flag is very nice.

Very nice. I worked in Bedford many years ago and used to frequently get lunch and drive to the Old North Bridge and eat it.

"I worked in Bedford many years ago and used to frequently get lunch and drive to the Old North Bridge and eat it."

Had to read that twice, lol..I thought you ate the Old North Bridge!

My brother used to be stationed at Hanscom AFB and would drive through Bedford every day. When I got back from Korea, I went to visit him there, and that's when I first became aware of the flag....

Haha,

I noticed my wording was odd after I hit the post button. I worked at Raytheon, which overlooked Hanscom field.

Great work...Making your own says dedication to the motto...

cb,

The folks at Colonial Flag in Salt Lake City have it on their website (http://www.colonialflag.com/bedford_flag_p/fhbed.htm).

I think I also saw a couple of Pine Tree designs. Look under their Int’l, State, & Military link.

Thanks for the history lesson. I’m always interested in learning the history of our great nation. Nice job on the Bedford flag. You are right that American made flags are expensive. I bought an American-made Stars & Stripes and a Gadsden flag last summer from a local specialty store and it cost me almost $70.00 for the two, which I consider money well spent as they are of very good quality compared to the department store variety. I fly them proudly, side by side and pray they last many years and our country lasts many more years.

That flag is beautiful. I bought a poly one to fly at some point (soon, I think.)

I also have a Goliad Flag which will also need to fly soon.
