Rick Perry: Ted Cruz #StrongerThanGarlic (40 acres of Garlic) Perry Backed Dewhurst

The Houston Chronicle is calling the huge Ted Cruz win over current Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst, an embarrassment for Governor Rick Perry who backed Dewhurst.

Perry took aim during the campaign at various out-of-state Tea Partiers who supported Cruz, including the Tea Party Express and Sarah Palin. The governor, who is also a Tea Party favorite, chided them to "come to Texas and learn how to do it right."

Cruz defeated Dewhurst by nearly 14 percentage points. The former state solicitor general is now the heavy favorite against Democrat Paul Sadler in November, given the Lone Star State's heavy GOP tilt. The race is to fill the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is retiring.

Perry's use of the "stronger than garlic" hashtag is a compliment and one of his favorite sayings. He once touted the tech sector in Texas as being "stronger than 40 acres of garlic" and said during the 2008 presidential campaign that Sen. John McCain was "stronger than garlic" when it came to border security issues. Source: USA Today

Sarah Palin revealed that the black and white boots she was wearing last week at a Ted Cruz rally were given to her by Governor Perry. She said after the election was over, the party would come back together, get behind the candidate and be friends again. Sarah is usually right, and Perry showed that today. Two thumbs up for both Governors and a big congrats to Ted Cruz.

It is an embarrassment. Perry's a loser and so is his candidate.

I call it like it is; if you can’t handle that, tough. If Perry had his way Dewhurst would be the nominee. That’s classless.

What could Perry do other than give a tipid backing to his Lt. Gov? He did not campaign for Dewhurst.
Get over Perry.

What could Perry do other than give a tipid backing to his Lt. Gov?

For starters, he could have supported the TEA Party backed candidate and he could have refrained from attacking TEA Party conservatives who supported Cruz. And you're wrong, he did campaign for Dewhurst. He did his very best to get him elected. That is anything but 'tepid' support.

Dewhurst and Perry then headed to Dallas for a fundraiser with top Republicans donors. They also appeared at a Dewhurst phone banking center in the city with the Republican primary's third-place finisher, ex-Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and former NFL running back and ESPN commentator Craig James, who finished fourth. Both have since endorsed Dewhurst.

Get over Perry.

Get over the fact that he proved himself NOT to be part of the TEA Party movement and TEA Party conservatives like myself won't soon forget it.

Maybe there are other schools of thought about the Perry-Dewhurst issue. Maybe Perry thought Dewhurst would win, he would be off to DC and then Perry would be rid of Dewhurst on a regular basis but might be able to negotiate for some support on Texas issues. But if Perry endorsed Cruz, Cruz defeated Dewhurst, Dewhurst returns as Lieutenant Governor and life in Austin is not pleasant for Perry.

Either way, seems to me that Perry’s support of Dewhurst, regardless of the outcome, was a better spot for Perry to be in politically speaking. In the meantime, I would suspect that Perry won’t be giving any more female politicians from other states a pair of Texas cowboy boots.

I’ve heard all the scenarios and potential justifications Perry may have had for supporting DD. But he could have done so w/o attacking TEA Party conservatives.

Actually I get the impression that Perry and Palin are relatively close on politics. Perry has a lot more experience for sure. Don’t think he ever regretted the Palin or Tea Party association.

There were several and still are one or two rabid Perry haters on FR. Some backed Palin, a few Bachmann-bots, but most were clearly Paulnutz.

Perry is no longer in the national game, we are happy to have him as Governor.
