Roger Ebert claims “2016: Obama’s America,” the #1 movie, isn't playing in Chicago [Sat AM update]

Roger Ebert claimed that “2016: Obama’s America,” the country’s #1 movie, is not playing in any Chicago theaters

This is Roger Ebert’s website. For the weekend of Friday, August 24, 2012, he has written reviews of seven new movies:

Premium Rush

Hit and Run

Red Hook Summer

Cosmopolis

Robot and Frank

Chicken with Plums

Nobody Else But You

All seven of those reviews are actually dated Wednesday, August 22, 2012.

As I sit here writing this, it is Friday evening, August 24, 2012, and his website does not have a review for 2016: Obama’s America, which is the #1 movie in the country.

I suppose it’s possible that the movie was not available early for critics in Chicago to see. If that’s the case, then his review should be up tomorrow, August 25, 2012. (Update: It is now Saturday, August 25, and he has still not reviewed the movie. But it is early in the day – perhaps he needs more time.)

Over at one of Roger Ebert’s blog entries, I asked him:

Roger, when will I get to have the privilege of reading your review of the new film “2016: Obama’s America”?

He answered:

At such time as it opens theatrically here.

I responded with the following. Since I just submitted it, it has not yet been approved by Ebert:

So you’re saying that the movie which is number one all over the country is not playing in any theaters in one of biggest cities in the country? I can’t recall that ever happening before.

Actually, it’s playing at FOURTEEN different Chicago theaters:

FIRST BOX OFFICE: Anti-Obama Movie #1

By NIKKI FINKE

August 24, 2012

FRIDAY 2 PM: The anti-Obama movie 2016 Obama’s America went into wider release around America today and is opening right now in first place at the domestic box office. That’s quite a feat since the Rocky Mountain Pictures political documentary is still playing in only 1,090 North American theaters – or about 1/3 as many theaters as big-budget actioner The Expendables 2 (3,355 theaters).

Like I said above, I suppose it’s possible that the movie was not available early for critics in Chicago to see. If that’s the case, then his review should be up tomorrow. (Update: It is now Saturday, August 25, and he has still not reviewed the movie. But it is early in the day – perhaps he needs more time.)

Is that movie seriously the “#1 movie”? My BS detector is going off the charts on this one.

Is it the highest grossing movie in the nation between the hours of 9:00 and 10:00AM, or something like that?

I’ve seen the commercials for it on TV, and it does indeed look very interesting.

Who is saying this movie is number one???? It says the Obama Movie is number 13 and made 200 grand. I want the movie to do well but when I read that the movie is number one then I get happy and want to check my websites the I go to regularly and to my disappointment it is untrue. Why the lying?

You know # 13 for a documentary with almost no mass marketing is pretty darn good...considering this movie is geared to adults and not teenagers...which are the largest movie going segment

Sales will increase especially as word of mouth generate ticket sales....

I can easily see this movie move to the top 5

Seeing it tomorrow...

Its not the #1 movie. I think, at best, it was making the most money per theater, but thats not uncommon for political movies that go out via limited distribution. It IS doing well for itself, however, and he should probably review it, much as he did those other “documentaries” of Moores.

It's NOT the #1 movie in theaters right now, it started out as the #1 documentary.

Grundle needs to clarify this.

It was Number one Friday because of Prepurchase of tickets. It is Now Number 3 behind Expendables and the Bourne movie, Not Bad if you ask me, especially since it is only playing in one third of the Screens across the country

Roger Ebert is like the kid in that classic New Yorker cartoon:

“I say it’s spinach and to h*ll with it!”

He’s a liberal, the film criticizes Obama, so he’ll not just pan the film but tell people it doesn’t really exist.

Thanks everyone. The source that is linked to in the article said it was #1 on Friday evening, when the article was written. Thanks for the update.

Looks like #13 to me:

This is one reason blogs suck.
Made-up or unchecked information.

Blog on, blogger.

Maybe not bad but the other movies you mentioned have been out quite awhile. I am going to the 1040 movie today. I just hope it is better then an Americn Carol which was awful.

No, it was not made up or unchecked. It cites a source, and then cites the same source a second time with a quote from the source. At the time the blog was written, it was indeed the #1 movie. The blog has been updated to say that it was the #1 movie during Friday afternoon.

I heard this morning that it’s at number three now, but that number 1 listing isn’t surprising. As you suggest, it was prior to last night’s numbers coming in. Documentaries are day movies. The regular weekend fare doesn’t take off until Friday evening.
