TV Comedies' Role in Normalization of Homosexuality

ALEXANDRIA, La. (BP) -- "The New Normal" is a television situation comedy set to debut on NBC in September. According to advance reports, the premise of the program is a woman becomes a surrogate mother so a male homosexual couple can start a family.

Let me say that "new" might be applicable in the title. "Normal," though, is a stretch.

Whether you use any of the various synonyms for the word normal or employ it as an adjective or a noun, one thing is certain: Two men using a surrogate mother to produce a child is anything but normal.

First, my research indicates that surrogacy is, at best, controversial. Approximately eight states and the District of Columbia ban surrogacy contracts outright. In New York the procedure is deemed void and unenforceable by statute but allowed by the courts. Only six states have explicitly approved surrogacy contracts through their legislatures and/or courts.

Second, the incidence of surrogacy among homosexuals is difficult to track. I could find no reliable statistics on the issue for male or female homosexuals. That said, the percentage of individuals who identify themselves as homosexual is so minuscule that any effort to label surrogacy in the homosexual community as normal is absurd.

A study released in April of 2011 by Gary Gates, a demographer-in-residence at UCLA, found that only about 4 million adults in America identify as gay or lesbian. This figure represents 1.7 percent of the nation's population. Gates findings affirm previous studies and are undisputed.

So what could possibly be the point in developing a situation comedy that represents a sub-group of folks in a population of people that make up perhaps 1.7 percent of American society and then naming it "The New Normal?"

I suspect the effort behind the new comedy by NBC is just another effort to use the vehicle of humor to further the notion of homosexuality as natural and normal.

The use of humor, in part, has been utilized to convince many Americans that the number of those self-identifying as homosexual is much larger than is actually true. A Gallup poll released in May 2011 found that "U.S. adults, on average, estimate that 25 percent of Americans are gay or lesbian."

How did most Americans come to believe that 25 percent of their fellow citizens were homosexual when the actual number is less than 2 percent? The use of humor and the overrepresentation in the media of homosexuals has certainly helped to contribute to this skewed perception.

A variety of social studies have found that people are more open to controversial and objectionable ideas if the issues are presented in a humorous manner. Laughter, it seems, causes people to lower their defenses, since humor is associated by the mind as non-threatening. Humor, it appears, has a way of desensitizing people to ideas they deem offensive.

It should not come as a surprise that the first gay characters to appear on television were in situation comedies. Television historians agree that the first regular homosexual character appeared in the comedy "Soap" that premiered in 1977. The role of Jodie Dallas was played by comedian Billy Crystal.

Over the past three decades gay and lesbian characters were routinely depicted in situation comedies. "Ellen" was a popular comedy that ran during the late 1990s. The show starring comedian Ellen DeGeneres was successful when it portrayed the main character's sexuality as ambiguous. However, the coming out of Ellen was portrayed a bit too seriously and resulted in viewer backlash.

"Will and Grace" followed "Ellen" and was all comedy all the time. Some social scientists believe the comedic portrayal of homosexuality in "Will and Grace" resulted in much of mainstream America coming to view homosexuality as a benign subject, so much so they called it the "Will and Grace Effect."

Since the success of "Will and Grace," homosexual characters and gay themes have flooded the television market. Ellen DeGeneres has even gone on to have a successful talk-show on daytime television and is currently a spokes model for JC Penney.

The representation of homosexuals in the media has been well documented by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). In recent years GLAAD has annually issued its "Network Responsibility Index," which tracks the favorable portrayal of homosexuals in the media.

In the "Network Responsibility Index 2010-2011" GLAAD reported that the cable network ABC Family dedicated 55 percent of its original primetime programming to themes/depictions favorable to homosexuality.

GLAAD's report on other cable networks and the percentage of primetime programming favorable to homosexuality are as follows: Showtime, 37 percent; TNT, 33 percent; HBO, 31 percent; AMC, 29 percent; Syfy, 22 percent.

Broadcast networks, according to GLAAD's report, that are most favorable toward homosexuality in primetime are: The CW, 33 percent; Fox, 29 percent; ABC, 23 percent. NBC scored 15 percent, CBS 10 percent.

Every network is guilty of trying to normalize homosexuality. NBC -- which scored only 15 percent in that GLAAD index -- even used its Olympics primetime schedule to push the issue, broadcasting a profile of an Australian diver who had come out as gay. The feature was so sympathetic, GLAAD could have filmed it.

Hopefully those guffawing at "The New Normal" will realize that one aspect of the show will be accurate. A homosexual couple must resort to some form of scientific sleight-of-hand like surrogacy to reproduce, because they cannot do so the "old-fashioned" normal way. Biology betrays them.

Excellent points made in this piece; this being one of the best and aptly explains how we have gone from "The Bird Cage" "In and Out", and Will and Grace, on to "Modern Family", gay marriage and adoption, and the so-called "New Normal":

It’s a false normalization based on misrepresentation and lies about their numbers. It is the same sort of overinflation blacks use with the media and politics to make it appear they represent more than the 12-15% they comprise.

“ABC Family” features a show entitled “Pretty Little Liars” that has a homosexual (two teen girls) relationship. Also has a statutory rape relationship (male teacher with female student).

That’s their ‘family’ channel!

Goal is to ‘normalize’ homosexuals to control public opinion.

The LDS Church owns KSL radio and TV, here in Utah. After viewing the pilot episode, KSL has stated that they will not be broadcasting this series in Utah.

Would be nice to see other churches perform similarly.

I will not even turn that channel on and add to their ratings and I hope eeryoe on here does the same.

I’m not telling anyone about it, I don;t want anyone thinkng what the big uproar is about and adding to their ratings, let this die to a silent death and give them another lesson like so many of their homosexual programs have been given.

Frankly, I don’t think I want to see any TV where the main characters bugger each other, whether funny or serious. I’m not into un-natural behaviors - even on TV.

If you can’t put them alone on an island for two years and have them produce an offspring unaided, then the relationship is perverted, period.

good for them and that is one thing about mormons. They do fight against the homostapo and the queer agenda unlike some.

The north east is rampart with their homo pals and homosexuals and yet that area is Catholic. Now there are Catholics which are real Catholics though I wish they would move out of that hell hole and move to a swing state and make it more conservative.
But there are millions who say they’re Catholic or prod and then go with the killing of babies, homosexuality taught to little 5 year olds, marriage, adoption etc.

It’s a sick unhealthy unneautal sex they do and the media is infested with these mentally sick people.

Every church, every black church needs to be talking about this and marriage, the GOP needs to get out to churches, Jews, muslims about this and let them know eevry week that there is a party today which is now endorsing this sick agenda and one canot sit there, kneel there, stand there in htis building and then vote for what you pray against.

For me and many others I know we’re not that religious but we sure as hell find it repugnant, sick, perverted, disgusting to even think of their agenda.

I think the last network television I watched regularly was the Mary Tyler Moore show, Bob Newheart and the Muppets. Haven’t watched the stuff in years.

Whether it is straight couples or gay people behaving inappropriately in public (disgusting either way) I won’t watch that kind of programming.

It’s more obvious all the time, too.

The issue no has mentioned is that there are a tremendous number of commercials where the announcer or character in the commercial is obviously gay.

Commericials with straight people, on the other hand, usually have a wife only or a wife making her husband look and sound like an idiot.

It’s across the board.

I had one woman trying to defend two men who she knew.

I pointed out that sticing their penis into a mans arse and having feces on it which causes disease is not my view.

I put that picutre into her mind and her face just changed, seems she had never really thought aout what tey do to each other and then I asked her becuase of this unnatural sex as nature did not intend for two of the same sex to reproduce ten why should tey have special rights and if you do not call it special rights ten please tell me what rights have been taken away from them and what do we have and they do not.

She stoppped , thought after her long picture in her mind of two men doing it to each other and then said for the only right was they cannot marry.

I asked can you or I marry the same sex, can a man have 4 wives as some religions call for?

She replied sheepish no.

At the end of the debate , she and I calmed down and she admitted she had never thought of it like that.
Seems she got her info form a couplke of homo’s she knows and she let emotions get in the way of thinking

Yes, and it has been the entertainment industry’s agenda for quite some time: Not only normalizing homosexuality, but sexual deviancy of all kinds. I saw some of the filth on “Will and Grace” and “Sex and the City” : It was obvious what their plan was. Unbelievable. And now they go for the even younger set of viewers. Good parents should beware.

It’s a full-court press right now. Lots of outings, high-up polictical types giving it the thumbs-up, and TV networks working overtime to convince us it is normal. I feel overwhelmed trying to protect my family from this nonsense.

Growing up in central Florida in the 80’s, one tends to be very Disney-centric. It took a long time for me to convince my wife (and a Christian worldview class we attended that was given at the Christian school she taught at) that ABC Family channel is anything but a family channel. Once she was able to watch these programs with a restored worldview, and with much prayer on the matter, she finally came to terms with the agenda of Disney/ABC.

When it comes to homosexuals, I tend to think like Jack Nicholson in As Good As It Gets: “As long as you keep your ‘work’ zipped up around me, I don’t give a rat crap where you shove your show!”

The blame for all of this lies squarely on the shoulders of Billy Chrystal.

Without his portrayal of a Sodomite on Soap, in the Jimmy Carter 1970’s, we would never be in a place the Sodomites control the American Christian Airwaves.

Today, there are gays all over the TV, from most sitcoms and most movies and even on Fox News.

And that is only counting the Sodomites that are considered the “talent.”

How many TV shows, movies and news programs have Sodomites that work behind the scenes as cameramen, directors, costume designers, make-up artists and even best boys?

There is almost nothing we can watch that is not infected by the Sodomites.
