My prep purchase of the week: bulk spices at $6-$10 a pound online (much cheaper per pound for 25 pounds, but that’s A LOT of garlic powder). For about twice the price of grocery store spices in their cute bottles, I can get enough to last through several years. I store them in a cool, dark, dry place and refill the cute little bottles as needed. I just replaced a dozen spices that were running low after quite a few years.

http://www.bulkfoods.com/spices.asp Note: This is not the only online bulk foods site, and I’m not sure whether it’s the cheapest, but it is one option.

Next week bulk Mouth Wash? I mean I know you are getting ready for SHTF, but I say we draw the line I chemical/bio weapons! ;-)

Besides mouth wash's alcohol content makes it a good barter item.

You can never, ever, have too much garlic!

I’m looking for a 12 volt solution (car batteries charged by solar panels) to pump water from my well, should the grid go down for awhile. Could hand pump, but a nice auto solution would be nice. Drop a hose or pipe down the well-head, pump the water up and into an outside faucet/garden hose hookup to re-pressure the house water/pump system reservoir. 220 VAC backup systems (wind, solar) to run the existing well pump are hard to find. A pressure switch would be nice, too, that stops the pump at about 50 psi. I may have a source for the pump but need more info on the pressure switch, and suitable charging power from the panels (or a windmill).

Have you thought of boat shows?

A bilge pump will operate only when the level of water reaches a certain height. You could adapt it to kick in when the water is reduced to a certain level.

Marine batteries typically are deep-cycle. Plus, many boats and yachts trickle-charge their on-board batteries with solar panels wrapped around the spars. These marine PVC's are essentially blankets with the cells woven into them; since they're for marine use, they can stand long exposure to the elements.

Food for thought!

Looks like this: Quite tasty and makes alot of leaves. It grows on a vine-like stalk and just about as soon as you pick off the leaves at the top of the vine, it grows new ones. The bugs and slugs and rodents leave it totally pretty much alone.

True, but if you use enough to need more than 25 pounds before it goes bad, you need to plant it in your yard. Garlic grows like a weed.

"I have two - bar fire starters and a big bag of laundry lint for starting the fire.

Stuff that lint into paper egg cartons, drizzle with melted wax. Awesome firestarters! Just break off an "egg" or two, put in your fireplace/stove/firepit, and light.

Sooo, why didn’t you tell me this years ago? How many egg cartons got thrown away because you didn’t tell me?

I’ll keep them now - thanks.

Since I just came back into flush times

Awesome news FRiend. I've noticed tidbits in your postings in the past 6 months that things have been bumpy for you.

Glad to hear you're on an uptick. I think you could take the prize on FR as The Most Self Sufficient Freeper.

My daughter's in-laws gave me WAY too much tilapia for my little freezer. Has anyone had experience at drying tilapia?

Tilapia is high in Omega-6 which is not good for you. Pick a fish with Omega-3...it's good for you.

Tilapia Nutrition, Tilapia Omega 3, Tilapia Omega 6

"What may be surprising (and alarming) is that in some fish, including one of the most highly consumed fish in America, farm raised tilapia, omega 3 levels are very low and tilapia omega 6 levels are high, including a particularly inflammation-promoting long-chain omega 6 known as Arachidonic Acid (AA) which orchestrates much of our body's inflammatory response."

I didn't choose the fish. They chose me. ;). I have a LOT of tilapia in the freezer that has to go away, and I don't want to waste it.
