What Des Moines Police are calling a tragic accident, central Iowans are calling inexcusable.

“We’re going to look into and find out exactly what the circumstances were that led to Harley passing,” said Sergeant Chris Scott with the Des Moines Police Department.

Harley, a Labrador retriever worked as a K-9 officer with the department’s vice and narcotics unit.

Oddly, the article refers to the officer as being both the dog’s partner and owner. Did the city not own the dog? Did the taxpayers spend a large chunk of money to enhance the value of someone else’s animal?

I had a Geman Shepherd that was adopted by a police department. My understanding was that they were trained and then paired with an officer at some point in their training, but yes, the tax payer is paying for it.

This was not an accident. This was criminal negligence and animal cruelty and should be prosecuted as such.

I’ll save my outrage for children locked in cars.

So only one thing in the entire world outrages you?

You cannot be outraged by several things?

What an empty vessel.

No , it sounds like a police officer was killed by fellow officer Brian Mathis. It’s clearly an accident but there are laws about killing a police officer such as Harley .. You or I would go to jail and would be forced to pay back about $50,000 that the police claim to be the training expenses. I’m way past tired when it comes to double standards and priveledged government types.

You can’t be outraged at both? It’s one or the other only?

ANOTHER ONE??? Last time it was two in the same car.

The arrogant bastard responsible should be fired and sent to jail for animal cruelty and made to pay back to the taxpayers the cost of acquiring, training, medicating and maintaining that dog.

Cop behaving badly - AGAIN.

Thanks Joe. There’s never an excuse for this. I take my Yorkie to the Speedy Stop for milk and bread - put the windows down part way and still worry the few minutes I’m gone. But, he loves to go with me so much!

That’s 4 K-9s died that way I’ve read about here in the last 2 months or so.

Does that include the one in Ocean Springs,MS. just last week?

Indeed. If we are viewed by the police (and society) as having killed an officer if we shoot a police dog, then the same laws should apply to them.

This is not feudal Europe, where the knights of the realm had special privileges not afforded to the common peasants.

I’m afraid, this time, I have to agree. Or at least, fire them without benefits. Hpw many times has this happened this summer? It *is* inexcusable.

Dogs. Are Not. Disposable.

Am I the only person on earth who knows where their dogs are at all times?

Maybe I should become a cop.

No, I do as well.

I have never left a baby or a dog in the car.

How could anyone not understand that you never leave either in a car and sure as hell not in hot or cold weather?

More importantly, your dogs know where *you* are at all times.
